I had a very bizare thing happen today that has never happened before. I got stuck behind a dump truck on my way home today. I waited patiently until an opportunity came that I could pass. I down shifted and started my pass when I see some on coming traffic. I still have time so I drop another gear and give it more gas and nothing! It fell flat on its face. I was still able to make the pass but it was to close for comfort. I have no idea why this happened. Everything is good that I know of plugs and fluids and the like I have a new air filter too. So what could have happened? The air temp today was 104 so I am wondering if that had anything to do with it or if there is something else that I need to look at.
Mine is at the shop righ tnow for the same problem. I went by yesterday, and still no answers. I thought mine was sumping too. They have checked everything to do with the timing, and were planning on going through the fuel system today...
So what exactly is sumping? I have seen the word thrown around a few times but don't know what it refers too. I do have another thought as I have been considering this issue. I was low on gas. My light had come on, not that I depend on it, which means that I have at least a half gallon left. When I shifted back up I got my power back and have had no further problems with it. The stations that I go to are either Chevron or Shell and are pretty high volume so I'm not sure that bad gas is it.
Bad gas can happen, even at a larger grossing station. And, as far as I have read, Sumping occurs when oil is not scavage out of the engine quickly enough. Leaving a 'pool' of oil in the bottom of the engine. This makes the bike work harder to run. Someone decribed it as running through a pool of water. You have to work a lot harder to get somewhere the higher the water level. Same with the oil in the engine. If the oil is to much in the engine at any given point, the engine losses power trying to 'run' through the excess oil. I, obviously, do not have the exact wordage down, but, you can get the idea of what I mean. Someone, in the know, I am sure will hop on here and give the correct wordage. This may not be your problem, but something to concider.JMO
