Default Wireless or Wired Help

Hi guys wondering what people are using
for headset communication.
i have a 2018 street glide with the Boom 6.5
stereo system. I want to be able to answer and use my phone have gps prompts, Not concerned about driver to passenger communication..Was thinking about the sena
freewire system and I do have the 7pin wired din plug to go into the Freewire. I’d even be good with having wires and need to plug a headset into the din plug and not spending lots of $$$ to get it up and running.
i don’t have a headset or anything yet and want to know the options.
thanks
Dale

Dale I use a Sena 20sEVO in a Nolan 87 full face with a sena free wire ....My hearing is not real good so I wanted everything into my Helmet.....Very happy with this set up,Music sounds good,GPS comes in loud and clear and no one knows I'm on the bike using the phone....Just remember each system,Phone,GPS,intercom has their own volume control and each need to be adjusted individually......Good luck...Oh my bike an 18 RG Std...

Default Wireless

Thanks for your reply
That is probably the route I will go also.
Thought about going with corded headset just
to save some cash but don’t know what type of headset I’d need to go that way either..
Wireless sounds like the way to go.
Thanks
D.

By a HD wired headset to start, about $50 used but not used much. Then later you can spend big bucks on wireless if wired bothers you.

I started by using the Harley Wired Headset. It worked, but I didn’t like it. If you read reviews most people have problems with it cutting out, losing connection, etc. I quickly dumped it and went with the Sena 20 S Bluetooth headset and the FreeWire transmitter. It works great, I have full compatibility with my Boom System. I’m very happy with the setup. I’d save your money, pass on the Harley corded headset, and go directly to a Sena wireless headset and Freewire. You will end up here sooner or later anyway.

Buy a wireless headset and forget the Freewire - you don't need it. Pair the headset to your phone. Pair your headset to your bike. Pair your phone to your bike. Done.

What the Freewire does that you can't do otherwise: allows you to speak to the bike - which you don't need to do. With your headset paired to your phone, you can call//text/GPS/whatever right through your phone - no need for the Boom system to handle that. If you do want to use the built-in Boom navigation and such, you can still do that. You can still have everything show up on your Boom (calls, texts, music, etc), you just cannot provide voice feedback.

In short, you would have complete functionality of everything you want to do. You speak to your phone with the headset, you don't speak to your Boom - and everything works great.

Want to get navigation to the gas station? "Siri/Google, take me to the Circle K on 12th and Main." DONE.
Want to change the music? Use the thumb controls. Or, if you want to play a specific playlist, "Siri/Google, play Led Zeppelin." DONE.
Want to call someone? "Siri/Google, call Kim." Done.

You even have control wear the sound comes from for each item (calls, music, GPS): headset only/speakers only/both.

2019 SGS w/WHIM......also have bad hearing. I too wanted everything in the helmet. I use a Sena 10S and mix and match between using Sena Speakers and S Plug earbud w/speaker. The speakers work fine on surface roads, but earbuds are required for high speed highway travel. I even bought a FiiO A3 Portable Headphone amplifier that makes the helmet speakers usable at any speed.

I keep trying to invent a reason to upgrade to the H-D Branded 20S, but can’t find one. Yes, the music quality is mono on the 10S, but I mostly listen to podcasts and talk radio anyway. Music by any delivery means loud enough for me to hear at highway speeds would rob me of what little hearing I have left.

Aren't you assuming there is a WHIM installed? A wireless headset will not pair with a Bikes Boom GTS with out the Wireless Headset Interface Module.

I have not had the "so-called" problems with the wired headset cutting out, loosing connection, etc. that these reviews state. I have had the wired headsets on two different Ultra cLassics and NEVER had a problem with any of them. So that comes from a user, not some internet cowboy that posted bad reviews and NEVER used them.

And the wired headset will do everything that the radio will allow. No problems talking to other riders a CB, no matter what brand of ride or unit they have. Always have no issues with intercom to riding passenger either. Both have access to CB, Radio, intercom and GPS. Unlike the issues with the WHIM and radio, branded Sena headsets not playing nice with the others in a group, etc.

The BT headsets may be all the rage, but with Harley, they still have issues that you don't encounter with the wired headset. I'm not knocking the wireless way, I just don't think it is where it needs to be functionally yet. My proof is the number of topics on this forum about the issues with the WHIM and the different wireless headsets. There are literally thousands of posts about them.

AND, Harley markets the "wireless capability", but you STILL have to buy a $300+ WHIM to make it all work, and a wireless headset to boot. What a SCAM!!

I took my first long ride this past week after installing the WHIM and HD branded Sena 30K. It worked flawlessly and the battery lasted the full 10 hours per day of riding; that's with music on the whole time and talking to other riders off and on. I have to say the clarity of the intercom audio is amazing too. No regrets here.
