I bought the complete swing arm rebuild kit from v twin Manufacturers, pivot shaft and everything on it with isolators. I slipped the bushings on the new shaft and I was able to slip .002 brass shim between the bushing and shaft, .003 wouldn't fit. Pressed the bushing and bearing in the swing arm, but didn't fully seat them as to be able to get it in place easier, then put the shaft and isolators and torqued it all down dry just to check fit. With no shims, I have no play whatsoever. Maybe the harley ones have more play? I have a good friend that was a mechanic for Harley and I asked him if he ever had play after changing those bearings and he said no. That's why I decided to do a test fit. I think I'm going to put that .002 shim in anyways, just for some insurance.

Your bike, your $$, I support your choice.

Good luck with your pursuit of better handling.

What do you mean you torqued it all down and have no play? I'm not quite following you here.

I think he saying that if the swing arm pivot axle is tightened down everything is stiff. Clamping load holds everything in place.

When I slid the inner bushing over the shaft, I was able to put a .002 shim in between the shaft and the bushing. But when I put it together dry with no shims and torqued the pivot shaft to 55 ft lbs, I had zero movement in the swing arm. Took it out for a ride and its alot better, not the exact result I wanted, but better. I think I'm just expecting too much out of the setup. No matter what I do, theres always going to be flex due to rubber motor mounts locating the swing arm, even with the rear swing arm stabilizers. Who knows, maybe I'll get my mad scientist friends together and engineer a solution for this. On the issue with the vibration, WOW, what a difference with the new rear motor mounts and a glide pro front motor mount!! Didnt even think my rear were even bad, they just came with the rebuild kit
