Default 2005 Road King Classic

Hi

New to the forum and the world of bikes.

Boyhood dream of owning a HD Road king is about to happen.

Problem is I have seen so many bikes now, both New and Old - the 88 twin cam 2001-06, 96 from 2009 and the 103 and brand new version now I am at a complete loss - too much choice. I know I wont buy new as I prefer the older look but was thinking of a 2012-14.

However I have seen a bike that really appeals, love the look and style. 2005 RK Classic with about £3,500 worth of extras added on. It has 18,000 on the clock - wanting £7,500

Am I stupid looking at such an old bike? What issues should I be aware of (Cam Tensioner keeps popping up) - is there a massive difference between other than the power of the 96/compared to the 88s?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

As you’ve already stated, cam tensioners may need addressing. The 05’s also has some issues known as valve-itis where the valve seals were changed to address oil usage. There is a bulletin about it regarding green versus orange valve seals. If it is an oil user, you may want to check into them. Power wise, you can always add cams, bore job, etc to make it to your liking.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy something a little older myself. Address the cam issue if it hasn't been done, then ride the thing. The 88" is a perfectly fine engine. My BIL has a 2006 88" Street Glide with 70,000 miles on it, that runs like a top.

I’ve an 04 Road King Classic myself. No regrets.

The stock 88 engine does just fine. Being a little smaller and catless, the heat isn’t nearly as intense as the newer bikes. Same the 5-speed vs 6-speed box, it does just fine with the 5.

I've got an '06 ultra with 103,000 miles on it.Runs like new. It'll be my last bike,I seriously have no desire to own a newer one.

I’ve got a 2004 FLHRS. Carb model to boot. Although I enjoy doing “upgrades” and what not to her she’s still been a great bike and will be for many years to come. Tensioner upgrade is a must on the TC88. If your mechanically inclined and do your own work it doesn’t cost much at all and many upgrades you can do to the 88” motor to leave 103” buddies scratching their heads and coming up with excuses. And even after all the upgrades probably still cheaper overall then buying a newer bike.

One other thing to keep in mind tho is your size and fit to a bike. Touring model frames changed in 2009. If you have the chance to ride a post 2009 and compare to a pre-2009 you’ll see the difference. The newer ones definitely accommodate bigger/taller riders for sure. Personally I stay away from 06-08 model touring bikes tho, it’s a personal preference though nothing wrong with them in comparison to other model years of the same decade.
