I agree with everything you said about the sporty, except I have the windshield, so bug free . Never ridden a big twin, yet, but the more I am looking, the more the Road King is starting to appeal to me. Might be an all round bike. Strip it down to windshield and side bags for runnin around, and add a tourpak and maybe a QD batwing for touring.
The more I look into them, the more I am liking. I PREFER the gauges closer to eye level, but I can adjust, I think. A road test will tell me for sure.
I worked at a Harley dealership in the early 00's. Im not going to lie, the Road King was THE gold standard for ride comfort and power upgrades. I just remembered the center of gravity felt a little lower and it handled better. It could just have been perception, but thats how I remember it. All the rich dudes were buying RK's as fast as we could sell them and doing major upgrades and making serious numbers on the dyno. Last year when I bought my EG, I started out looking at RK's but couldnt find anything decent in my price range. (Then again I got an amazing deal on my EG that I couldnt pass up)
I often wonder about the folks who need a 107/114. According to the inter, I should have died riding two up, pulling a 320 pound tent trailer, in the mountains on an 80 cubic inch motor.
There are lots of older low mileage FLH/FLT out there for $7,000 or less. Yes they are 88 inch motors. But they run well, and up to 2002, carbs were available. And if you want more motor later, they are available.
Sportiest are more sport like than big twins. But for traveling, unlike the big twins.

Goose, I get what you are saying, and I want the most power I can afford (about $10K). But also the more modern upgrades to the bikes itself, like suspension, frame etc.
Looking strictly at weight, figuring 850 for touring and 600 for my sporty, it takes a 103cu in touring to approach the pounds per cu in of the sportster. I know torque per pound will be different but weight is what I used. Then when loaded down for a trip, it gets worse.
A 96" would probably work if I got a steal of a deal, it all depends on the bike I guess.

I will tell ya why, because it was the biggest offered. If Harley had a 100" then it would have been bought. Those were the days when I and millions of others, thought a 750 Honda was a big bike, and I used to think a 900 Sporty was a big bike.
If I remember correctly, freeway speeds were nowhere near what they are today, either.
Also, they did what every Harley owner did, and still do, looked for more power.

I really dropped out of the Harley scene back in about 2006. Ive recently started riding substantially more in the last year and visited my local (former employer) dealer for the first time in over 17 years. The first thing I noticed on all the new bikes was the '114' on the air cleaner. Man they have done some substantial engine mods in the last few years. I cant wait to try out one of these new bikes. Maybe in in another 10 years Ill be able to afford a 2019.... 8^)
