Well I doubt compared to many of the jap bikes but my 1200 that is pretty stock sure pulls. It is plenty quick enough for me. I just don't want to end up with a touring model that has to go up big grades in 3rd or 4th gear when loaded. On curvy roads its understood, you (me) can only go so fast around curves so a gear change becomes inevitable.
My 09 Streetglide will go up a steep hill with a passenger and luggage at 75 in high gear with the cruise set. Thats 2800 rpm, no lugging.
I really dropped out of the Harley scene back in about 2006. Ive recently started riding substantially more in the last year and visited my local (former employer) dealer for the first time in over 17 years. The first thing I noticed on all the new bikes was the '114' on the air cleaner. Man they have done some substantial engine mods in the last few years. I cant wait to try out one of these new bikes. Maybe in in another 10 years Ill be able to afford a 2019.... 8^)
I did test ride a 2019 SGS with a 114, a few weeks back and after signing some paperwork, the salesman told me about a 12 mile loop. I will tell ya that power was unbelievable. Cruisin at 80 on the freeway and crack the throttle and that sucker pulled as hard as my sporty in lower gears, or harder. I bet it could get spooky if ya kept it rolling on.
So a question on the 6 speed trannys. I understood the early ones had too tall of a 6th gear, so what year did HD correct this? Did the '09s still have it?

I think it was corrected in 08 because I had an 07 and you couldnt get into 6th until you hit about 65 or 70 mph. My current 09 is comfortable in 6th at 55 or 60 mph.
Great, I have been seeing some good prices on '09s. I know they also have the improved frame, but seems like there could still be compensator issues.
How can you tell, say on a test ride, if a comp seems like it might be going bad?
mine went at 30000 miles. No tell tell sign other than the occasional hot starts. The bike would start fine cold but it made all kinds of racquet if it was hot when I started it. Like at a gas station
Way to test your comp is to place your bike in 1st gear holding in the clutch, hold front brake and slightly release the clutch as you’re giving some throttle...almost like doing a burnout if you will. You won’t hear anything if comp is OK, otherwise it will make a knocking sound which means it’s on its way out.

It wasn't actually the transmission, they haven't changed the 6 speed tranny that I'm aware of since it came out. The problem was the 07-08 bikes had tall gearing in the secondary drive, as in the rear drive pulley and transmission pulley combo. Many of us changed the pulley/belt sizes to improve the final drive ratio.
