I get that in my knees and other joints when the weather changes and if I drink too much the night before; happens on the baggers as well as the Low Rider.

Pull off the primary cover and have a look.... I wouldn't drive it with a loud grinding noise...
Could be simple as your compensator bolt coming loose, or a broken primary chain tensioner.... or it might not be from the primary at all....
Gotta open up your primary and see what is, or is not, grinding in there..... it just takes some time, a little primary fluid, and maybe a new gasket...
