Default SE muffler tips

I have a set of Kerker pipes with slash cut tips and they are just a bit loud, I thought that I had read somewhere where the tapered tips are a little bit mellower ? ? ? ? ? any comments or ideas appreciated.

I have Kerker slip-ons also. Is there any packing on the baffles? Pull out one of the baffles and check to see if it's wrapped. If not, you can buy new packing to quiet them down, and it'll be cheaper than new tips.

I have the SE race slip ons and there is a difference in perceived sound with different tips. The open billet ones are loudest, sport taper is somewhat quieter though they have a wierd hissing wheezing sound at idle and when letting off the throttle due to the way the tips are rolled in,I tried filling the gap with high heat black silicone but it did not make much difference and suprised me by not blowing out or burning up,the sharkfin ones are the quietest of the three I tried so far and are actually quite a bit quieter than the open ones. If you want really loud run it around the block with baffles out. I am gona try the turn outs next. One thing I do like is the subtle looks change you acheive just by swapping tips.

I ran the sport (tapered) tips for a year on my touring mufflersand then bought the open billet tips. They are definately louder than the sport tapered tips. If you want it to run a little quieter without a lot of trouble or expenses, getting these tips is worth trying.

Do some checking but I am pretty sure tips frpm supertrapp ans kerker will work too, both the small hole and large hole ones worked on mine so far. Also look at Ebay, sometimes there are really cheaply priced ones that are not perfect but work fine, the Sharkfin ones I got on Ebay were scraped on thr bottom of the tips at the ends but a little filing evened them out and you could not tell from 3 feet away, I think they cost me 23 bucks for the pair. Also while you have them apart check for rusting especially in the left side, I wire brushed/sanded them and cleaned them before spraying them with high heat paint.

I don't doubt that new tips will change the sound of your exhaust but I know for a fact that the baffle packing will. When I got my Kerkers I installed them with the full packing and they were too quiet for me. I removed half (left the rear half of the length of the baffle covered) and tried again, but they were still too quiet. I was used to my Fatboy with some V&H Big Shots and wanted more sound. I ended up removing the baffle packing completely. Each time I remove more packing material the pipes got louder, so I know that replacing it would quiet them down.

You can buy packing on ebay pretty cheap. Here's some 1/2-inch thick stuff for $13 bucks (with shipping): ebay link

There is also some cheaper stuff on ebay that has a lower heat resistance. I'm not sure how hot the exhaust gets at the mufflers, so I can't make a recommendation on which to buy. The safe bet would be the one I linked to, which has a higher heat rating.
