Hello. I just happen to have 2 cases of hd 240 20W50 motorcycle oil. The part number is 99817SP. I know hd 360 is the latest non synthetic. Is it ok to use this hd 240 in my 2019 cvo road glide? Also, what is the difference between hd 240 and hd 360? What does hd 240 and hd 360 actually mean?
Put a case in storage for another 25 years. It'll be worth more as a novelty. Put the other case on eBay now, some diehard guy will be ticked to find it.
Is the service rating on the bottle anywhere? You are looking for letter combinations like SJ, SN. The second letter goes in alphabetical order with the letter farther from the beginning of the alphabet meeting the most current specification (at the time the oil was formulated). SJ is an older, less demanding spec than SN. If those letters are not on the bottle or case, perhaps Google would reveal the information. Look in your owner's manual and see what spec the oil must meet and if the old oil meets that spec, it is OK, if it doesn't you can always use it to kill weeds along the fence. By the way, the S is for spark ignition engines and the C is for compression ignition engines (diesels).
I haven't paid that much attention but I thought the new M8 motors came spec'd out with HD Syn oil. What does your owners manual say? I'm guessing the 360 has a different additive package than the 240, but just a guess. If I felt I needed to spring the extra change for a CVO model I certainly wouldn't be worrying about saving a buck on oil.
Thanks for the replies. My 2019 CVO road glide owners manual say if harley syn3 or hd 360 is not available, use a diesel engine oil. It says acceptable diesel designations are SH, CH-4, CI-4, and CJ-4. I thought SH is for gasoline engines. I wonder if this is a misprint. Does anyone know?
