Let me state upfront I do not have a big twin, yet! But I often read of someone installing true duals. Is there a performance hit or gain when making this switch, from a system with a built in crossover?
Is a 2-1 the best power producer for big twins like it seems to be for sportsters?
It also depends on how you ride the bike. Are you cruising around and wanting the botttom end torque to pass without shifting? Or are you like me and riding the fire out of it in the top half of the rpm range. Ive found the duals suit me better than a 2-1 for my style of riding as they seem to breath a little better up top. But the low end lost is hardly noticeable and its still very easy to just putt putt around and cruise.
I've had true duals and a 2-into-1 on my Glide and had both set up on the same dyno. by the same operator. The headline numbers were very close, so if comparing max HP and max TQ there was little to choose between the two. The difference is that the 2-into-1 system gives significantly more low/mid range torque, for the rev range many of us normally ride in, but the unexpected bonus is how much smoother running my bike is with the 2-into-1. That alone is worth the swap, with the better rideability and comfort. I have no plans to change!
