Default Cam suggestions

I have a 2006 Ultra with a California Side Car trike kit. I've installed Cobra header pipes and the Cobra Fi200r fuel manager. I am considering the S&S cam chest and oil pump kit with 509 cams and gear drive. My question is with this being a trike and all of my riding is turning no more than 3500 rpm's, is replacing the cam chest overkill? Also with the 509 cams, will I have to get it tuned or will the Cobra fuel management handle it?

Being a 2006 it is worth upgrading the cam chest, however I would steer you toward a hydraulic tensioner system. I had gear drive on my Softail, and despite runout being within spec and the gears being set up properly I still had a noticeable amount of noise, especially on the highway. Also, your crank runout may be out of tolerance for a gear drive system. The piggyback systems work ok for stage 1's most of the time, I'd get a dyno tune with Powervision if it were mine.

I agree with all three points highlighted.....

You should get rid of the OEM spring cam tensioners, whether you upgrade the cam chest or just go with Cyco cam tensioner shoe replacements.

If you want gear drive cams, MAKE SURE your crank run out is .004" or less (some say .003" or less), or you will destroy the gears in time.....

I'm not a big fan of piggyback tuners, especially for anything over a Stage I.... I am a big fan of the PowerVision tuner, but if you have a good, local dyno tuner, whether he uses the TTS or PowerVision, get the one he is most comfortable with...

Powervision Tuner... I would do a 95 or 98 kit with a good torque cam.
