Guys I need some direction, I have a 07 Road King, when I got it it ran great, then I did a fulsac dual conversion and it started popping through air filter at idle and tip over when opening throttle, I then during the winter added new mufflers and a s&s performance air cleaner, still it pops through the air filter as it did before, im thinking its a lean condition and needs to be tuned, but im also leaning toward replacing cams and tensioner since it has 40k in miles, and since im going to need a tune why do it twice, so im asking is there a good off the shelf tuner that will self tune or does it need to go to a dealer with a dyno? the town I live in the dealer doesn't have one and the nearest one is 2 hours away. Im no looking to race , im looking for good response in highway running .
My preferred dyno shop is a lot further away than a mere two hours! Forget the 'race' reference, as a good dyno tune will optimise performance throughout the rev range - at least in my experience. A competent operator will also identify any problems affecting your bike contributing to your popping, such as poor fitting parts - in my case the exhaust system I so 'carefully' installed! If you don't have a tuner you may well need one, however I do suggest using a dyno shop, who will advise which brand to use also supply, fit and fine tune it.
You're running way too lean. Your tensioners should be ok at 40k but it's worth a look. Your bike has hydraulic tensioners. If you don't have a good dyno person you can use then try an auto tuner. Typically dealers aren't good at dyno tuning and you'd be better off auto tuning. If you find a good dyno person that you're going to use then buy the device they prefer to use.
We use the Dynojet power vision tuner on our bikes. If you buy it through Fuel Moto they will provide maps for the combinations you have like headers, slipons, air intake and cams.
If you make changes get a new map, they are very easy to use. I did several auto tunes on each bike and they run great, never felt like I needed to have them dynoed.
I ran a Andrews 26h set of cams in my 07 with a power commander 5 with a canned map from Fuelmoto. I always have had a Screaming Eagle air cleaner and free flowing exhaust. The true duals are a bit too free flowing and robbing your bike of some back pressure , that with a air cleaner and no tune makes for back firing...
if you want more power feel, 2in1 pipes Andrews 48 and a good tune. Will wake the bike up...get rid of the true dual....
i have that in a trańsplanted 103HO and it woke it up so nicely....
