While I agree that the dealer's charge way to much money. $50 bucks doesn't seem right to me. Heck, I spent a bit more than that for my Amsoil fluids. And that does not include the 3 o rings, and oil filter. Not to mention the time. Took me about an hour and a half, but I was doing my 5k and had to adjust the primary chain tensioner. But, you are right in the fact that HD does charge way to much, that is why I started doing my own (as most of us here do).
The sevrivices are expensive, BUT IF they follow the checklist, it's quite extensive. Log on to the HD web site where you check for updates and recalls. Put in your VIN and Mileage and it will print out a checklist for your next service. Then do all the things on the checklist. Lots are quick and simple by them selves but you will be surprised how fast the time adds up. And remember to add cleanuup time.
Dealer around this area want about $300 for the 1k check.
G/F was going to go there for it. Her and I walked around the bike
with checklist in hand, showing her what was what and what the dealer
would ACTUALLY do.
Did the whole 1k minus actually change the the oil (that will be next week)
in 15 minutes.
Nothing needed tightening or adjusted.
Oil change will be about 45 minutes. and about $30.
First 1k change will be semi syn from Valvoline and a carquest (wix) oil filter. Will use the sporster primary / tranny oil from the indy. about $8
Yep if it ain't warranty, DYI.
I don't trust any of the stealers in the Houston area. The best investment I made was a repair manual, the first time you reference it, it pays for itself. If I can't find a clear answer in there I come here or some other forum, and if that doesn't work there is a Indy shop right off I45 called Osbourne Cycle. They've always steered me in the right direction.
Make friends with an idie in your area for jobs out of your range of ability. they are usually better attentive to your needs and your scoot. i have one that has a beer fridge and doesn't mind showing me things. not to mention he doesnt mind me raiding the fridge.
If you do not want to do it yourself, or check it yourself, or call corporate cuz they f'ed up AGAIN.... Find an Indy. There is no good reason to pay for chitty service. That is mostly what you get from the lifestlyle appliance techs. Need to find stupid? Look for the Bar and Shield award. That has been my experience with 4 dealers in the VA MD DC area. On the first independent shop, and things are looking better.
