Default Friend's Classic Spit out the Sprocket Bolts

He was riding to work, and felt a strange vibration, then a clunck and all hell broke loose. He was on the interstate and at first the rear whel locked, then release and he was able to get it to the side of the road. Three bolts, the heads were sheared off, two left but they were backed out. Chewed up a custom wheel, sproket and at big chucks out of the swingarm. My first question, was it a chrome sprocket ant chrome bolts - Yes. I have personally now heard of three such experiences, all with chrome bolts. He did use blue loctite when he putit together. Red probsably would have been better but I think it is actually something wth the damn bolts. Something is amiss here as there have also been numerous threads on the Forum detailing the same occurence. I am gonna leave the stock sprocket and bolts in place as this could be a life threatening occurence.

The same thing happened to Dave(a friend of BryanTTM's) on the Colorado ride.He caught it while it was an easy fix. It's a strange and bad deal.I think I'd try the red lock tight.

Thanks for the heads up.
Ito have read similiar things and seen them to.
Its also very interesting to know that a lot of people on this board and elseware dont come out and saythat a mod they made fuged somethin up...we all would be shocked if we knew what some of the biggest complainers on this board really did to there bikes.

Craig, were they the chrome bolts or stock? I keep hearing over and over that the chrome bolts are snapping off, but also am not sure cause if you change the sprocket, you most likely will use chrome bolts, maybe the red and proper torquing will prevent it but it really has me spooked. I put the original sprocket and bolts back on y new wheels, have almost 5k miles since installing and have rechecked the torque. They haven't budged, same wth wheels on last bike, used stock sprocket and bolts on new wheels, and put over 40 k on em without a problem. I got a bad feeling about the bolts being too brittle due to chroming process.

Had the same thing happen 2 weeks ago, After i got the wheel off I though the bolts backed out but the studs were still in the wheel. The only thing that 3 of us came up with was the pulley which was powder coated both side, if you looked at the back side of the pulley you could see where some of the powder coating had chip off ( the stock pulley has a machine surface that meets a machine surface on the wheel ) so even though it was TQ I think that the gap that was left after the powder wore off was enough to loosen the pulley and BAM. Live and learn that's the last time I will have thepulley P/C LOL

I'm not real sure Guy.They had it back together by the time I rolled up.Bryan will know.I do remember him saying that he had just had the wheels and sprocket installed right before the trip.I think Peekaboo Bob and Bill helped fix it.Maybe one of them will chime in soon.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine. Except he still had the stock sprocket. And the dealer wouldn't honor it as warranty. Luckily he had just gotten off the freeway, and pulling into a gas station. All bolts sheared.

I think the failures can be related to grade of bolt maybe? Most critical fasteners are grade5 or grade8 bolts, those little hash marks on the head of the bolt. If they don't have any marks, you are flirting with failure on any critical component.

I replaced some non-essential bolts with some chromed bolts from the local hardware store. No grade markings. Looks good, but will fail at somepoint.

Be careful out there, there was/is a huge black market in fake or counterfit hardware.

That's enough for me, I'm taking my chrome ones out and replacing with some grade 8 and red locktite.

Good choice, i just looked at my stock flange bolts on the rear drive sprocket, they are grade 8, they have 6 little hash marks.
