There's no way I'd pay $100-$170+[sm=insomnia.gif] for a 130db horn on a motorcycle, especially one that looks as tacky as those Howard Horns.
I've used Fiamm 130db Freeway Blasters on every bike I've owned- $35 a set and will light up any cager on the road. You can put one in place of the stock horn & hide the other behind a saddlebag. Can't even tell they're there till you hit the button...
Put a Whelan Air horn and100 watt speaker mounted to crash bar ,just like the cop bikes and you will never have a problem again. In fact you would be amazed at how many people will pull over.
It may just be me, but I don't think I have honked my horn once, when on the road. I put a horn cover on, tried it then, and doubt I have touched it since. Heck, I have been trying to find a hand shift kit and figure I will remove the horn completely to mount the jockey shift. LOL ... Come to think of it, I can't remeber the last time I honked a horn in either of the family vehicles.Weird, guess I am lucky enough to never need one. Oh well.
I use my horn several times a day. Anytime there's a left-turner waiting for me to pass, or someone waiting for me to pass so they can enter from a side road I give a short blast just to make sure they see me. (How many times have we heard from a m/c accident victim "He looked right at me then pulled out anyway.")
I also hit the horn a good blast when I approach an intersection with multiple threats. It's amazing- I'll see a stopped, impatient driver starting to ease out into my lane, and someone starting a left turn in front of me, and whatever else, then I give about a 2-second blast on the Freeway Blasters and they all STOP, eyes wide. It works every time.
Considering 77% of all m/c accidents happen at intersections I figure anything I can do to get everyone else's attention is a plus...
I ahve the larger Howard's Dynamic Duo horns on my Ultra with the lowers on. I cut a piece of plate metal and drilled some holes and moved it back 2 inches. Works great. Makes the one your are honking at move over and the 2 ahead of him also.
I got Howards for my 96 RK and what a difference above stock, I have several folks start to lane change right into me while they are on cell phones or just move over into my lane, I know better about being in there blind spot but when I let them have it with the duel trupets and they jerk back in a hurry, I don't think aboutcost then it isn't even a factor. I wonder what they tell my 2 year old. I have had a problem though, my fuel line above the horn because theline is rubber the braket that holds the trupets has cut into the hose, and on Monday there was fuel leaking and flying at me. Spending this weekend fixing that.
I had horns on my 96 from Howards Horns they are great. The problem is now with my 07 Ultra the horns will not fit with the lowers on. Do any of you know of another type that is loud and not a fortune? The Howards were 145 and I traded the bike in right after I bought them, I thought they would fit the Ultra.
try the chrome mini stebel-as loud as my howard dualls and very compact. i mounted one on each side of the frame on my last metric and wow. put one on my buddys yama the other day. well worth it!!
