So I replaced the bars on my 2008 Electraglide. I put the Kromewerks 2+2 on. That all went well. Only had to reroute the clutch cable. Wires were all fine. My issue is when I replaced the ignition the little release on the bottom stays down. I put the key in, turn it past lock press the button on the bottom pop it on and when I turn back to lock the release little button pops back down. Is that normal? I don't feel it is because i can pop it back off without the key. What am I doing wrong? When its on all works as expected.
Text below is from the service manual. Memory is failing in my old age but it seems I remember having to straighten the bars/wheel a bit for this to work.
"Hold the **** down and the turn key clockwise to the
UNLOCK position. An audible "click" should be heard
when **** and switch are properly engaged."
Yeah that's how I did it and it does click and everything works but I can press the release and pop it off without the key. I tried holding the button up while turning the key to lock but can't keep my finger in there. I'm not sure if the button is down all the time or is up till you turn the key past lock. But either way it shouldn't be able to come off without the key :-(
That button is to release the locking pawl so you can remove the ignition switch from the ignition housing. These are from my 2020 Service Manual but these were the same instructions for my 2014 so unless the 2008’s used a different ignition switch, they should be the same.
1. See Figure 8-11. Remove the ignition switch ****.
a. Insert ignition switch key and turn to the UNLOCK
position. Leave key installed.
b. Rotate the **** to FORK LOCK.
c. Press and hold the release button at bottom (left
side) of the ****, and turn key 60° counterclockwise.
NOTE
Spring will drop out of bore at underside of **** when removed.
d. Lift **** to remove.
Thanks for the pics and explanation. I popped mine back off and played around with it. When its in the locked position and I take a screw driver when i press the button I can push the pawl back about halfway which is probably why I'm able to pop it off. I'm thinking its worn out. I sprayed it with wd40 so we will see. But I may have to replace it.
I took mine off to take those pics but after I reinstalled it, I noticed I can’t turn the key to locked when it’s in the fork lock position. If I turn it to ACC, the key turns, and locks it in ACC.
