Default Roadglide Insights Wanted

Hey Folks

I’ve owned several Harley’s over the last 20 years. Currently own 17 Road King and 08 Heritage Softail. Due to multiple knee operations, the Heritage makes my knee ache. Changed seats, Floorboads, and shifter. I think by sitting down in the bike just puts in an awkward angle. The Road King I can run all day and no problems. So having more time at home and thinking, maybe leaning towards selling the Heritage and buying a Roadgldle. It’s funny years ago I thought they were ugly. Now they are a work of art and probably the most functional. I generally buy used bikes and let others eat depreciation. So what is the best deal on a used Roadglide?

2017/18 low mileage under $20k
2014-16 low mileage $14-16k
pre 2014 low mileage $11-14k
Or even 2009 CVO at $18k

I do mostly 2 up riding. I find the Roadglide Ultra has all the gadgets. However I find the specials, customs, CVOs with the colors I like and I’m not a fan of a trunk. When I travel I have a big bag strapped on the sissy bar and I bring into hotels when I travel long distances.

Any insights from the knowledge you all have would be great.

I would target the 2017/18 low mileage under $20k....that has the current M8 engine.

Road Glides were not made in 2014. At that time H-D was developing the Rushmore models.

15 and 16 are probably the best because they are the last years of the twin cam second I would say 07 213 07 was a great year for Harley not a fan at all of 1718 models I would jump to a 20/20 before I bought a early M8 you know they go back all the way to 1980. The chassis mounted fairing has always been a success even on the FXR significantly better handling on the open road in my opinion especially in crosswind

I recently traded in my Street Glide Special for a Road Glide Limited (the limited replaced the Ultra in 2020). I originally wanted the Road Glide Special but for the price difference it made more sense to go with RGL since my wife likes to ride with me as often as she does and it would cost far more to turn a RGS into a limited than it would to make the limited look like a special... For two up riding the Limited is definitely the way to go and if you want to set up for solo cruising a tour pack quick detach kit is easy enough to install. You can't go wrong with either version. Good luck!

I agree that is nice, however the market is loaded with low mileage bikes with poor resale value. That’s my target. An ultra would be a good possibility though. Some of those seem to go cheaper since there is a higher demand for customs or specials.

Get a used 18 road glide, detachable tour pack mod and new shocks and you'll be good to go on a M8.

Buying a fairly new used bike also brings up the possibility of buying someone’s problem, especially the older M8’s.

Around here dealers still have 2019 RGU's in stock, so you might want to look for a deal on a 2019 leftover too.... I never had any issues with my 2017 M8, but I also think I was lucky.

My 15 RGS was a great bike, except for the harsh ride in the rear due to shorter shocks than the RGU. (I could have upgraded but never did) After 68,000 miles I traded up to a 19 RGU and am loving it. The M8 has plenty of power from the factory and I have no complaints. Front and rear suspension is much better and I can haul more junk. There’s bags for the trunk and saddlebags to make going in and out of hotels easier. Plus there’s room for another bag on the tour pak rack. Make it removable and you have a dual cooled RGS with chrome. Or black if you get a 20. Lowers have to stay on though cuz that’s where the radiators are located. Stock bars are higher on the Ultra/Limited too and I’m happy with them so far.

Only major issue with the 15 was a bad cam bearing at 49,000 miles. Covered under warranty (started squeaking)
Only issue with the 19 was trans fluid transfer but the primary breather fixed that.

Like mentioned, you might find a great deal on a leftover 19, but I’m sure there’s lots of other ones out there a little older. 19 also has the newer, better stereo/gps/CarPlay system if that’s important to you.
