windshield advise
I since ordered one and installed one off ebay. I do see a slight distortion in one edge, but for $35 I will live with it. I do not get buffeting from it, but it is a little high. I wear a FF modular, and the only buffeting I get is if I ride with the face shield up, but chin guard down. The face shield apparently disrupts the airflow enough to buffet. I wear the face shield up, most of the time. If I wore my 3/4 I doubt I would get any at all.
Bike came with 6.5" klockwerks, lots of wind. Swapped out to Freedom Shields 9" touring width, hardly any wind on me or my wife and stereo is louder. I tend to end up looking right through top of it.
All fine until weather is poor and low visibility. I have medium tint.
I just ordered the 7" touring width to see how I like it. Will give some feedback when it comes in. They are a little backlogged right now I think.
I got windshield set right, then changed to more comfortable seat (making wife happy). Then had to get a different windshield due to different seat height.
I also noticed, when I tested my ebay shield, before removing the opaque cover, I couldn't see the chock at all. Was really kind of nerve racking on the road test. I have no idea how guys ride with dark shields. I know you look over, but when you are moving in close quarters, its a bit weird not seeing whats in front of me.
They can come from the top, the bottom, or the sides. You can do that trick where you place your arm across the chest to see if it's coming from below. However, based on what you describe, they are probably coming off the top. If you are lower, or closer to the screen, the vortex trains coming off the top of the screen are less likely to hit you.
Options:
1. Taller windscreen.
2. Windscreen with a lip, to make it seem taller. Note, the lip is very un-aerodynamic and will tend to spin off vortices like crazy so there's no guarantee it will work. Note, if you have the height set at upper lip level, you have to kick the wind up 4.5 inches to get over your head, more like six inches to get over your helmet. Tall order unless you're sitting pretty close to the windscreen.
3. You may be able to do something with the vent, if you can direct wind up the inside of the windscreen, and it sticks
4. Get a windscreen that's aerodynamic, and less likely to shed vortices
The latter does not kick the wind up and over, so it works best with a full face helmet, unless you don't mind looking through the windscreen. Or you can go shorter, if you don't mind having the wind break at about neck level. Sounds weird but that's basically what people are doing with bullet fairings, they are just trying to keep the wind off the chest, they let the head be in clean air, as if riding without a windscreen
Near as I can tell, California Scientific is the only vendor making an aerodynamic windscreen specifically designed not to shed vortices.

It depends on what you're up to
-- No helmet? We probably wouldn't be having this discussion... people who choose not to helmet don't seem to get buffeting very often, if at all
-- Full face helmet? CalSci is the obvious choice
-- Open face helmet? You got your work cut out for you, I think maybe the key is to have a LOW PROFILE helmet, otherwise you may be asking the impossible. IE to protect the face and eyes, AND be able to look over the windscreen, AND also kick the wind up over your mushroom-like noggin configuration
