Every shield I have used that I looked over, gave me buffeting. If its right at my eyes or above, nada. I PREFER to look over but am tired of getting shaken rider syndrome, from buffeting. Its like mini concussions.
As for LRS, my personal experience, ai will never buy another one of their shields. They tell you you can test it as long as you do not remove the plastic cover. That cover is so huge, that if you do test drive with it, you will have no idea how well the shield does. There was at least 3-4" of excess on each side, and several inches on top and bottom. Remove the plastic, and you own it for keeps. No return, no exchange. Others have the same policy, but have them show you a pic of how it will look when it arrives to your door.
Plus there was so much distortion you would not want to look through it. I spent $160 for a chunk of plastic I cannot use.
Your windshield should come between your lower and upper lip of your face for correct fit.
I seen that elsewhere before I bought my windshield and followed that advice when I bought my windshield, big mistake. It was good to 50mph then buffeting started shaking my head like a paint mixer. I put on a set of HD fork deflectors and that took care of the buffeting.
As the weather started getting hotter I was less comfortable with the fork deflectors, afraid it would cut air to my motor. I then bought a taller LR recurve shield putting the top at the bridge of my nose and that took care of the buffeting without the fork deflectors. Those deflectors really cut the air coming up from the bottom and around the tank and work great in cooler weather.
Bike came with 6.5" klockwerks, lots of wind. Swapped out to Freedom Shields 9" touring width, hardly any wind on me or my wife and stereo is louder. I tend to end up looking right through top of it.
All fine until weather is poor and low visibility. I have medium tint.
I just ordered the 7" touring width to see how I like it. Will give some feedback when it comes in. They are a little backlogged right now I think.
where are you located ? i have a 9" freedom shield touring in my garage shelf .im not using it if your close to ct come get it for a try. im 5.9 32 inseam it works fine helmet or not .my pillon likes stocker better so i dont use it.
In my search I was surprised at how an inch or two on windshield height can make such a big difference. Change the seat, big difference. Change the rear shocks from stock to Progressives, another big difference.
It took me a few years to get where I have no buffeting at high speeds and still be able to look over the windshield. I have three now with one I do look through the windshield, that one will be my winter windshield.
I now have a 9" standard curve shield, and honestly look thru as much as over it. Unless I ever get to try before I buy, I will stick with this. The only time I get buffeting is behind a big truck. I know this isn't "ideal" but it works. The LRS I got was the 7" wide touring mega curve. An 8" would probably work better, but would still be in my line of sight, and theirs was so distorted it was a distraction.
I would love to be able to look over easily, but got sick of throwing away money. The one I use now, I seriously got off ebay for $35 shipped.
6ft, long torso, 9 inch freedom shield on my 19 limited. had lots of LRS on my old 05. bought several due to the many sales of up to 70% off they used to have.
Quality between LRS and freedom isn't even close.
Zero distortion, thicker and the edges are perfectly polished.
I also have a Mustang seat but a super touring that sets you down and back.
Shield is right under my nose.
I don't have buffeting issues even with a half helmet.
Have a buddy help you out with a yard stick and level, measure the height properly and you'll be happy.
I'm 5'9" and 30" inseam. Tend to slouch.... Freedom Shields 9" touring width, hardly any wind on me or my wife and stereo is louder. I tend to end up looking right through top of it.
Ditto... Another 5-niner here and the 7" Freedom Shield is on my SG the majority of the time. It's the perfect all-around shield for me. I pop on a 9" shield for long-haul rides. I personally did not find a big difference in coverage between the "touring width" and the standard width on the 9" shield (I had tried both).
I recently picked-up a 6" but I am planning to sell - too much buffeting for my size.
John at Freedom Shields is great to work with and has a fantastic product.
Well picked up a Klock Werks 8.5 i hope going from 7 windspliter will make a difference.Being in Canada might take awhile to get it but hoping for the best.I emailed John from freedom good dude will order from him if klockwerks does not work
