My Hy-Lift Johnson lifters came today, ordered 2313SLE and the box has 842SEL written on the outside..... Larry doesn't seem to respond to emails or calls
Thanks, he replied to an email stating the same, I have to send one lifter back, on lifter roller had a bad spot on the roller surface,,, the grinder clean up dimension was unable to grind a low spot and stay with the OD tolerance... so I get to mail one back at my cost, so they can swap it out,...
"Hylift Johnson lifters", not to be confused with Johnson Lifters.

Reviving an old thread here,,
I just put Jim’s lifter in my Evo. (Total rebuild). Turned the motor over and there was no compression in the front cylinder. Ended up finding the exhaust lifter had fallen apart and the piston was stuck inside. After getting it apart and cleaning it. It still doesn’t move smoothly. Feels very gritty. Now I’m afraid to use any of them.
Lets hit the way back button, and what did you set the pre-load on the lifters from the start.
If not enough pre load on the lifter from the push rods, then any lifter is going to be hammering it self to death to begin with.
Also, the pro's and cons of the slow leak down lifters, comes down to are you dam sure that any oil remaining in the case, has been removed, as well as derbies too.
With how tight the piston it to the ID of the body, trash in oil, can cause the pistons to stick to body, to cause them to hammer as well.
Simply put, with any lifter, and more radical cam, pre load for any lifter, should be half the distance that the piston can be pushed down in the body, and with a lot of suggested push rod adjustments, or using the wrong amount of turns for push rods that have finer threading, can end up with push rod not putting enough pre load on the lifter to cause it to hammer it self to death.
So with Johnson lifters and no limiter rings in play, pre load should have been set at .100" at least, and maybe another turn on the push rod is still making noise once they do pump up.

I think you should have started a new thread but since you are here, no, I have not experienced what you did. Where did you purchase those lifters? All you did was turn the motor over, so pre load had nothing to do with a defective lifter. There are only two sources I am aware of where the slow leak down Johnson Hy Lifts can be purchased; AMS and Larry's Motorcycle and Machine. If the defective lifter came from one of those two sources, you should contact them to let them know of the issue. Additionally, if the lifter came from one of those two sources, I would not have an issue using replacements from them; however, if purchased from another source, no bueno. The lifters from AMS and WFO Larry are built to Larry's specs; tighter tolerances for slow leak down. The lifters with pin oiling are probably the best on the aftermarket at the moment.
