Only if you are "stomping" on it....

FWIW.... I have a heel/toe shifter on my three current bikes, as well as two of my previous bikes... I don't shift any harder with my heel than I would by using my toe.. I never "stomp" on the heel shifter when I upshift, or on the toe shifter when I down shift..

I have over 100,000 miles collectively on heel/toe shifters...

Zero issues.

I've owned 3 baggers, about 20 years combined years of riding them. I've never had a problem with any of them, and I've always had the heel shifter on them.

Part of it may be, like so many things nowadays, that they were built better in the old days. Sometime from the late 90's onwards there are a lot of reports of this stripped/worn rear shifter lever. I have to admit that when I first bought my 06 (in late 09) I "may" have been guilty of "stomping" before I knew it was a problem.

As others have suggested...it's all about the "stomp". For me, just slight heel pressure is all it takes for mine to slip into gear. I once asked my dealer "how common is it for him to replace a stripped one"....his reply: "almost never". The force one can apply by "stomping" is amazingly extreme...."gentle is as gentle does"....lol.....'macho man".....lol

I figured it would have to come out exactly as you described but I did not want to force it and it would not tip far enough to clear the bottom of the shaft.

Since I was able to get it tight I am going to leave it alone for now and just keep an eye on it to make sure it stays tight
I know this is an old post, but I wanted to provide my results. I was able to remove the transmission shift lever on my 2011 Ultra Classic Electra Glide without removing the primary. I plan on installing the Better Lever.

When the time time. Once I have to replace the shift lever on the tyranny, I'll pin the new lever t the tyranny shift. I did that to my 1989 ElectraGlide, and many others in the early 2000s. Better than replacing the tyranny shaft.

I bolted the new shaft in place, drill using an 1/8 inch drill bit between the shaft and the new lever, loosen the lever, then put in a solid pin (or a spring roll pin) into the hole, then blue locktite on the Allen bolt and reassemble.
