So I bought a cheap ebay back rest to see if I liked it. No matter what I did it leaned wayyy to forward. I just wrote it off as ebay crap. Well a member here was selling just a mount, so I got it. Same thing what am I doing wrong....I feel stupid...lol
When I had the non-adjustable, I had to bend the arms backward (had to heat them, they are HARD). Now that I have the adjustable, I tend to ride with it all the way forward. Go figure. What I learned was my butt could take a much longer ride when I was riding with better posture.
That black bracket you have is suppose to go underneath, not on top of the brass "tongue" on the mounting bracket. Also since you have the main bracket mounted on the front most hole on the fender studs, that black bracket is suppose to be on the front most hole on that "tongue" so it can reach the hole on the battery bracket on the fender. You should also have a locking tab to line up with the hole on that battery bracket for the screw to go into.
Line up the main bracket with the slot on your seat. Whichever hole is used on the main bracket with the fender studs, use the corresponding hole on that "tongue" for the black bracket.
I occasionally buy some accessories from Ebay and Amazon. The only parts that fit right all the time are authentic HD brand. The rider's backrest is one of them. I have an Ebay back rest in a drawer that is junk.
Highly recommend the Mustang driver backrest. It will fold down flat also which Harley's won't. I'd previous had HD adjustable and Mustang was so much better.
Have you tried moving the bracket, where it attaches to the fender? FWIW - Looking at your picture, my bracket is two holes back. Also, like someone else mentioned, there is a screw under the leather and you can back that out. I do this frequently, depending on the jacket I'm wearing for the day.
Best of luck to you.
