Default Want some info on apes

Sorry if this horse has been beat more than an engine oil thread.
How does one go about determining what size bars they need? I want to put them on my 09 EG but they would be for looks only. I don't have any comfort issue with stock bars. never had on my previous bike either. Granted I realize they may end up being more comfortable, that isn't my main goal. What height are the stock bars considered to be and at what point(s) are the heights measured from?
Any bars better than another? What about wiring harnesses and cables? Is it typically best to buy everything from one company as a kit or what? Bottom line, I know nothing about them except they look good on a bike. Any ideas, suggestions, lessons learned, etc. are greatly appreciated.

Well, whether you want to believe it or not, it is about comfort. You may not have any comfort issues with your present bars, but if you change them to other bars without taking into consideration height, pullback, wrist angle, etc., you might be sorry.

This company has a few videos on bars, how to measure them and which bars to choose.

These are 10” LA Choppers twin peaks on a 2010
Had to extend electrical only . Brake line, throttle by wire and clutch were fine. Just had to reroute the clutch cable a little.
There is a green plug/connection on the throttle by wire. Eliminate it. It will be no end of grief! Some cut it and solder the wires. I broke open the plug ends and removed the wires. That way I had both the female and male wire ends and just replugged them and heat shrinked each.
I used nylon cable sleeving on all. 1/2” on electrical and 1/4” on TBW. Makes pulling wires through bars much easier. I used Thin steel cable to pull wires. Lots of good videos on this...KST customs, ride it wrench it, etc

I think your stock bars are 8 1/2". 10's and some 12's will work with the stock wiring. 10's will put your hands at the top edge of the fairing and 12's slightly above.

16" LA Choppers Twin Peaks............
Your comment; "they would be for looks only", sounds like you are simply a poser wanting to look cool.
If that's the case, buy the cheapest set out there and bolt'em on..........and look cool setting in your driveway.

ybnorml, so I guess you and everyone else that adds anything to their bike, chrome accessories, chrome wheels, paint, or anything else that isn't a mechanical modification or upgrade, does it just for the cool factor? That take it that means you really enjoy those extended leather topped bags and pipes in your driveway as well.

Yep, with over 100k miles on mine it stays in the driveway all the time !!!
The "leather top bags" were to cover scratches on the top of the bags...
The "pipes" allow a better air flow and motor runs better....
Buy whatever bars look the coolest to you and be done with it !!!!

Your best bet is to go to the local used bike dealer or Harley dealer if they have a bunch of used bikes and find some with bars already installed, then sit on a couple and see what feels right.

I wanted 12's, sat on a couple 12's and they didn't feel right. Sat on a bike with 10's and it felt right.

I installed some 10" Yaffe MBB's and they feel perfect, they measure closer to 11". I've had them on my 2010 for about 9 years, wouldn't change them for anything else.
