Question Clacking issues remain.

Still having noise emanating from somewhere. Seems to be a metallic clacking noise from the lower front during mild acceleration and light cruise. Under hard acceleration it quiets down considerably. Idle and light load is terrible. I'm going to pull the primary cover but am wondering what I should be looking for. I'm aware of the compensator nut backing loose, but is it possible the chain could act this way if too loose? The motor has less than 5k on it and was quite stoutly built. The previous owner was no techie so he really didn't even understand what he was telling me. Here is what he told me.
96" (All Screamin Eagle Parts)
high output cams (255?)
HTCC pistons
Heads ported and polished
High performance oil pump
Thunder Header 2 into 1 exhaust
Mild mapping done to ecm
Compression release valves

I guess, I'm wondering what else I should look at if the compensator nut is not loose.

have you checked push rod / lifter preload?
Many a noise has been diminished by another half turn of preload

No, I haven't done that because because it goes awaynunder load. This isnt a ticking noise. Do these lifters make a metalkic clacking noise? I do have adjustable pysh rods. I could check them.

Quit possible the primary chain tensioner needs adjustment or is shot and the primary chain is flopping around hitting the case.

Kinda what I was thinking when it goes away under hard acceleration. Gonna pull the cover off when the gasket gets here.

You can reuse the primary cover gasket many times over.

I wasn't aware. I appreciate the info. Guess I'll pop it off today, then. Thanx!
