Steel wool here as well. I use it all the time on my V&H's for removing anything that does not come off with general cleaning. Leaves them looking like new

ACETONE!!!!! Works great, removes the rubber and cleans the pipes without scratching.
Around $3 @ Home Depot, Ace, Lowes, Auto zone, ..............................
