I am in process of buying a Ultra classic 2000 but the only model I rode so far was a 2005. I loved the ride but I am not sure that a 2000 model feels the same since I know that in 2002 the Ultra got few upgrades to frame, swingarm, suspension and engine mounts. If anyone has experience with both year models (before and after 202) I would appreciate a comment.
I owned a 2000 and curently own a 2005 Ultra. Two different rides IMHO. On the 05 the rear axle is larger dia, the tire is wider, no front air suspension and probably others that dont come to mind. Almost forgot my personal favorite the CD player. The 05 seems to be an overall smoother ride with added stability.
I have a 2000 Ultra and I love it. The only drawback is it has a casette player instead of a cd player. I make it work, though. Also, some of the earlier 2000 models supposidly have a bad cam bearing in them. Mine is fine so far. Someone here maybe able to speak more intelligently about it than I can.
Their was a 'silent' cam bearing recall for some early 00 models. HD will replace them upon failure only (as I know it). As for differences, the only big thing that comes to mind would be the stiffness of the swingarm, though Im not sure what year model this change took place. Could be after 02. The 2000 model should be nice, I wouldnt put too much thought in such details, as for any changes would be minor, and probably not noticed (just my opinion.)
Thanks guys for all the good info. I finally decided, and today I am the proud owner of a brand new 2005 Ultra Classic. I was not sure that a 2000 would provide the same level of comfort that the bike I tested and for something that goes over 15g I like to have a warranty.
Thanks again and I will join you soon probably with more questions. Here is one: What is considered a good insurance rate for this bike? I just got a quote from Progressive for $800 /year. It seems a little high to me. Am I right or not? I am with Progressive for three years now and I had no claims so far.
