I always say set you a budget you are willing to spend... and buy the newest cleanest bike you can find. Newer is USUALLY always better whether it be transmission/motor/suspension/frame or even some convenience items. Now I know some people will not agree with me but those are usually people who want a specific niche bike or item.
I waited till my sporty was paid off. My plan was to use that pmt money, and some of the cash from sportster sale, towards my "new" bike. I sold my 2007 sportster with about 21k on it, for $4100, and I think it was a fair price for both me and the buyer. I see them listed a lot higher but no idea what they sell for. Dealer offered $2500 for trade. Instead I gave him $2500 cash, I pulled from the bank, and replenished that when I sold the bike.
zi mention all this, just to show you can be flexible in how you deal with the seller. I set the pmt I wanted, figuring the term length into it, and actually got it under my target, using HD financing. Then refinanced through my credit union to drop it even more. We seldom ever pay full term on any vehicle.
Your credit score will help a LOT in a dealer being flexible. Mine was very high, so that helps.
Thanks yall, she rides like a dream. She needs a front motor mount and plugs, but other than that she functions flawlessly. Im very satisfied for paying 6k, will throw on some ape hangers as well
