Default new belt time

Well I got 100K out of the original 1.5" belt on my 99 Ultra. Then I put on a Falcon & got 5K but I also went to a 1" belt to run a wider tire on the rear. Chalked it up on me not pulling the swing arm all the way out & or the small box that they sent the belt in. Went and got a Harley Davidson belt (1") & now at 130k the belt teeth basically stripped away. Mind you I just got done modifying the rear swing arm to mount a 2013 SG tire & wheel, am running a DIY air ride that has been on for several years but does make adjusting the belt a bit harder due to when the rear axle going up & down changes the tension. I will be getting it torn down after I get some other things done that I have been putting off. I know I won't be going to a Falcon belt, but has anyone had good luck with any other belts out there? Thanks in advance.

Actually, Ive had the best luck with the HD belts, be it Buell, Sporty, built up Dyna, RK, or my FXR...
I SHOULD run a chain on my Dyna, BUT....

In my experience and that of some other people I know, HD belts seem to be the best. Certainly better than Gates. I don't envy your job; I've done it a few times and it's not a lot of fun.

Wow dropping from 1.5" to 1" sure cut the belt life a lot.

So you got 100,000 out of a belt 130,000 out of another one and 5k out of an aftermarket . And you want recommendation for an aftermarket. I am puzzled. I just a short time ago replace the belt on my 1996 24 year old factory HD belt. Only reason I replaced is the bike was apart it still looked good. I have put 75,000 miles on several HD belts before trading the bikes. I find it puzzling. You would even consider an aftermarket.

i read the op as he had 100,000 on the original, went to aftermarket, and got 5,000 on that, then wen to the hd belt and got 25,000 out of that one, bringing him to the 130,000 mark. if i'm wrong and he has 235,000 on a 99 ultra, then i am truly impressed, both with the mileage and keeping the bike that long.

If you have not replaced the sprockets, they will be damaging the belt - especially the front - it will be squared off and sharp instead of round. That is bad. Combined with a loose belt, it is a recipe for premature failure.

It sounds on your first belt that you back bent it trying to cheat and not remove the swing arm. A lot of failures occur there from breaking strands inside the belt.

If you have not replaced front and rear sprockets, now is the time.

H-D Belt is the best one I have personally used. Last one I bought was the Screamin' Eagle belt. Been on so long, I don't even know if they sell it any more. lol

I thought the general consensus was that the front sprocket didn't wear as it's hardened steel - but the rear being ali is soft....
If you have 100k on a belt and don't replace the rear sprocket the new belt isn't going to last long.

That's totally incorrect. The front sprocket wears and becomes very sharp. The rear wears as well.

130K miles on the Ultra total. As for the rear sprockets I have changed them out, when I went to the 1" belt & now with the 2013 SG wheel so it has the isolator in it. Both were used but no where close to the 100K my originals had. I am thinking I replaced the front sprocket at the 100k mark. But will look real close when I get it torn apart. Thanks
