I think that the bars have to be hard over left as well

Thats exactly the way I do it. I never tought about getting burnt by the pipes but I always wear long pants. Usually jeans. If it cold, I throw on leather overpants also.

I get on and off from the right almost exclusively. Don't know why, but it just seems easier.

I read where the author of Ride Like A Pro says that’s the side to mount and dismount. Take more full body engagement when you do it, so must be good for you. I do it occasionally.

Only get on from the right side. It's my rule. If I have to get on the left side, I move the bike , stop and get on the right side.
My buddies laugh at me dirt biking. When I fall i gotta mount from the right. Sometimes you can't. Big hills and cliffs etc.They know I need to stop and wait for me to remount

Gotta have some rules in my life

Turning the handle bars to the left is the key for stability. Right foot on the board and swing left leg over. Lean forward as you swing the leg over. I have a back rest and tour pack and it works fine.
