i Have been with American Elite form my 2011 since the stock D401 tires... I noticed there are no 180/65/16 Rear in the American Elite 4's but a 180/70/16 an 180/60/16 no 65 radius.. are the Elite 4.s mainly for Goldwing's and reading looks like the Elite 4's are better in rain than the American elites... Never tried the Michelin Commander III's... due to covid stock is scarce here in Canada.. Any advice greatly apricated...
Lots of threads about Commander 3’s elsewhere....having a set on my 19 limited, I’d say steer clear for now.
My question is this....you’ve had AE tires already, do you like how they perform? If so, no brained, get ‘em again.
If not...try something else.
All I can say is that I'm very happy with my Dunlop AE tires. Had a long conversation with a Dunlop tire factory rep who explained the difference between the stock HD Dunlops and the AE's. Told me that HD spec'd the stock Dunlops BUT Dunlop felt they could start with those specs and do even better. But HD said "no - we want what we spec'd" so Dunlop complied.....but then Dunlop improved on the design specs HD insisted upon built the tire and sells it as the AE, without the little HD logo on the sidewall.

Okay here's what if found out. I replaced an American Elite rear tire with an Elite 4 on my 2007 Road Glide. 150/80 16. I noticed a marked improvement in handling just from the rear tire installation. It felt like i was riding my Dyna instead of a big hog and i can lean until pegs drag with the utmost confidence and the bike is rock steady, not a wobble in sight . The American Elite handled pretty good but nothing like the Elite 4 so i went ahead and put one of the front. That just transformed the whole bike. Looks like the mileage is going to be about the same, around 13-14,000 maybe on the rear. Now this is on a me and Revolution Performance built 110 engine with gear drive Fueling cams. putting quite a bit of power to the ground. Never bothered to dyno it but it will pull away from similar bikes putting out 110/120. The more powerful your engine is the quicker your rear tire wears so results may vary.

I want to make sure I am correctly understanding what you are saying. You replaced a worn out rear tire with a new one (different model) and you noticed a handling improvement? Might you have noticed a handling improvement if you replaced the worn out tire with the same one?
One of the retired guys we ride with occasionally tries different tires often as puts on serious mileage. His new go to tire is the AE. He also so said the Avon’s were the best performance tires, Conti Tours the smoothest riding and the Commander 2 were just average. His opinion, not mine.
