Default street glide question

hey guys and gals, got a question? I just bought a 2007 street glide, i just got over 500 miles on the bike this morning. On the way to work i filled the bike up. About 9 am a buddy of mine called me and told me that my bike had fuel leaking from underneath and there was a small puddle of fuel also under the bike. I went out to look at it and sure enough he was right. Later today when i had a chance i went out and looked at the bike again. It wasnt dripping fuel anymore, so i decided to put it in neutral and start the bike up. I started the bike and a lot of fuel came out from underneath the bike. I turned the bike off. I took the left saddle bag off and then the plastic cover that sits right in front of the saddle bag. I started the bike and noticed where the fuel was coming from, there was a rubber black line that was secured to the frame open on the bottom end and connected to some type of module or something at the top of the hose, the fuel was coming out of the open end hanging free. Any body have any ideas of why this happened. Did I over fill the tank and this is a safety mechanism for overfilling. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks John Mansfield

I had the same thing happen last weekend and it was because I filled the bike up to the top while sitting on it standing straight up. I pulled out of the gas station and went about a mile down the road to eat and parked it. As soon as I stepped away the fuel started draining out. There must be a vent tube that allows the excess fuel to leak out. Did you just fill up with the bike standing straight up?

Gas in the ground contracts because it's cool. When ya pump it into yer tank, the air warms an' expands it. Thar's an overflow that takes the excess gas an' dumps it.....

Don't fill it to the top and you will be fine. If you are stopping for gas before a extended ride then fill it to the top otherwise leave a little space.

On the jiffy stand, I fill it up to the rim at the top of the opening. Then I ride it. Never have any gas draining out, but I don't usually just ride a mile and stop. The gas will expand and drain out if it sets out in the sun and gets real hot when it's full.

The first time this happened I was riding a 1200 Sportster on a warm day and drove only a few miles after filling the tank. Same symtoms with gas puddling under the parked bike.
I now own a 2007 Street Glide and had it happen once when I overfilled at the gas station and it started to drain out the overflow tube.
Solution.....Fill it on the side stand until you see the gas near the top. If you don't ride far and you park it hot, it could happen again....try not to park it full!

I always fill on the stand. To the top of the opening. It has never happened to me, and it does get hot here in NM. I usually top off the bike at the station near the house. Less than a mile away from home. Could it be something with the vented gas cap? Or, is it just normal? I know I would freak out a bit, if I was leaking fuel.

Normal Fuel\Gas expantion - You can top it off if ya Ride it no problem... If you top it and park it on a warm day it will expand - Remember the Stations Fuel Tanks are normally 15 - 20' + below ground and it's cooler...

I've only had it happen once, overfilled the tank .. scared the crap out of me. As soon as I learned what it was , never had that problem again.
