Default Replacement fuel tank.

Guys,I have a 1988 FLHTC. King of the highway. I have a leak in my fuel tank. Tried to patch it but not much luck. Are y’all aware of a replacement tank for this bike. An aftermarket that would hold 6 gallons.

thanks in advance for the help.

Preacher.

Exactly how did you try to patch it? What did you use?

I would patiently check on the Bay for a long time to find an original tank for my year bike. You might even get real lucky and find one with the correct paint color already on the tank. Aftermarket stuff can be dicey when it comes to gas tanks, HD makes the best. Now that doesn't get you to 6 gallons, but lots of threads on here about guys taking the newer 6 gallon HD tank and fitting it to older frames. Not sure how that works on your bike being older than the conversions I have seen, but anything can be done. Regardless, I would stick with a tank from HD as my starting point. Good luck.

Where is the leak? What kind of damage does the tank have? If it's a crack at a fitting bung, I'd take it to a welder that knows what he's doing and have it TIG welded and then clean and seal the tank again.

Have it fixed. Any competent welder/repair shop will be able to fix it.

HD usually has very thick metal ( try welding a rice bike tank, you can not turn the welder down low enough to prevent burning thru) so welding may be an option, but in the bad old days when there were radiator shops, that re-cored them by way of soldering new cores to the original tanks, it wasn't unusual to have a tank soldered to repair a leak..... granted some people then put a polyester lining material in after (Kreme) but that stuff dissolves in the presence of alcohol.... and we all know what is now up to 10% of our gasoline now unless you are using Rec90 or 100LL....

You need to seal the openings and pressurize it under water to see how bad the leaks are... and if you have a friend with a bore scope stick the camera in and peek around.... if not the Harbor Freight ones are cheap enough as are the Milwaukee ones... A good fabricator should be able to shape a piece and TIG it in, or if it is a pin hole with good surrounding metal than solder.
