A good friend has a 2015 Ultra. Today it started to register a mile every 50 or 60’. So he added some 7000 miles on a 60 mile ride. So what shall I tell him to do about it? I’m afraid if he takes it to a dealer, he will end up having a mileage unknown title when he goes to sell it.... Any help appreciated.

If he is adding x 10 on the milage, i would think the dealer can find the issue, and possibly reset the milage.

Needs to hook it to the digital tech to see what is going on.

 

Isn't there a sensor plugged into the transmission? I would remove and clean it off as a first step. Second I would replace it.

That's a new one on me.... I never read, or heard, of that happening before... Other than a recalibration at the ECM level, I'm not sure what part would fail to cause excessive mileage to be registered on the odometer..

Did this just happen all of a sudden...???

Was there some work, maintenance, or mods done before this started...???

Did he recently tune or otherwise download a new tune/map onto his ECM...???

What "repercussions" from the dealer are you worried about....??? If by that you mean they won't "roll back" the mileage to where the owner says the trouble started, no credible shop is going to "roll back" the odometer, even if they could, just on someone's word...

Changing mileage on a motor vehicle is regulated by law.. For about the last 20 years or so... dealers/shops are not usually (or legally) able to change mileage on an odometer at their level alone... It frequently requires some hardware/software/coordination at the manufacturer level... and that's usually only done to set the proper mileage on a new speedometer/odometer replacement... not to "roll back" mileage on an in-service odometer

Even if the cause is found and corrected, I believe he will be stuck with the mileage that is on his bike.....

He should probably trailer it to the dealer... and take it from there... but whatever he decides to do, I'd stop riding it until the issue is found..

Tell him to ride it backwards for a few hundred miles.

 

I have seen a speedo healer cause problems but then the speedo would jump all over the place at times as well.
