I would think the only way a dealer would do anything on this is if they can verify that it's still doing it. Otherwise, anyone could say that their mileage is too high.

I've been thinking about this more... I think he should call a Harley factory rep before he brings it in. Our dealer here in Florida is horrible, all about sales and don't give a rats azz about anything else.... Fact.

The “digital tech” is the diagnostic computer that hooks to the bike. Every service center will have one.

The milage should be stored on ECM, question is whether it was affected by whatever glitch is showing on the odometer. No way to know till it is read.

2015 ECM give mileage to odometer Period. It would be possible for dealer or other with a reader to read the mileage to see if the ECM shows it as the correct one. Then just a madder of a NEW odometer . Shortly after it is plugged in it will show the mileage the ECM has stored. A used one will not work. What dealer can not do is change the mileage.
The owner of that bike needs to take it to a HD dealer or good Indy that has the correct tools to read the ECM and test the odometer

He called Harley, basically they wouldn't tell him anything but take it to the dealer. So he's taking it to the dealer today. He's not riding it, has another bike he can ride.

There's another five or six hundred miles on the clock.

Should be able to disconnect the speed sensor and get it to the dealer to diagnose if you can't diagnose it yourself. Honesty goes both ways. Even after it's fixed, he could ride for most of the season using a GPS speedometer/odometer and leave the sensor unplugged until he recovers those miles. At the end of the day, the odometer will be correct. I know there are guys out there who do this purposefully so their bikes have better "low mileage" resale value. One of the many reasons I hate buying used bikes.

Curious though, if the mileage was kicking up that fast, what was the speed showing?

Is it still doing it or did it stop? If it's still doing it, I would hope he's trailering it in.

He's going to have the first 1,000,000,000 mile Harley!

My speedo quit and stopped recording miles, and it turned out the be the speed sensor. But I was hoping at this point, you'd have an explanation as to what caused this issue.
