I just went through this myself. It's your dealer. The service writer at my dealer took few days to get me the estimate. I send the pics to the insurance company once my claim was started. Dealer never sent anything to the insurance. The dealer sent me the estimate and I sent it to the insurance. Insurance company never sent an adjustor, they just went off the pics I sent. Never even called me.
Last summer when i wrecked my bike, the dealer told me right away it would be 1-2 weeks before they'd even get it in to look at. What really killed me was it was 3 months and 1 day to get it back. Blamed it on waiting for harley to send painted parts plus covid
I just ordered painted parts. 6-8 week lead time is what I was told.
There's only one "local dealer" ... bet if you try real hard, you (and anyone else) can figure it out
yep, its not rocket science.
And while im on the subject, still nothing has been done. I was going to go pick it up and take it somewhere else, but the bill to them has to get paid from my insurance first.. Im willing to bet the riding season is over for me the way this is going.
Your bike has been at the dealer a month and they haven't even looked at it? Either they don't want the job, or they are incompetent. Call a tow truck Monday and arrange to take it somewhere else. I wouldn't allow a dealer like that to air up my tires let alone rebuild the bike.
I had an out of state crash that did around $7k damage to my Electra Glide. When I got the bike home I called a friend who managed an HD dealership. He was up front with me and told me to get an appraisal and If I wanted him to do he work, it would be ready around April. He told me this on October 25th. I turned in the appraisal to my insurance company and ordered the parts from a dealer that gave me a 20% discount and I did the work and pocketed the 20% and the labor. I rode the bike on New Years Day. All the parts were in, about 3 or 4 weeks.
For me to take the bike, i would have to pay the bill so im stuck waiting for insurance to do it.
Did they say what work they've already done that justifies a bill? I could understand maybe getting charged for storage. But it sounds like they are trying to bill you for work that they tell you flat out that they haven't had time to do yet.
On a somewhat related note...I'm curious about people's reluctance to name a dealer? Did I miss something in the forum rules about getting specific about dealer experiences? Otherwise, I don't get why people say things like "the only dealer in Anytown, USA" but not "Anytown Harley"?
For me to take the bike, i would have to pay the bill so im stuck waiting for insurance to do it.
I wouldn't say you're stuck. You need to tell your insurance adjuster to Sh*t or get off the pot!! For either of them to take a month is unacceptable. If the dealer can't provide an estimate, the adj. should be sending an indy appraiser to the site to get it moving along.
Buy the service writer and his buddies lunch or hand him a 20. Stop by in person. Consider telling them you don't want the bike anymore and that you plan on buying a new one from them if that's what you want to do, like I did.
When I went through this the service writer had to take a bunch of pictures of the bike and submit them through an app. My insurer was State Farm, there were issues and he had to go through the process twice. The claim was then subbed out to another company for review. In the end the bike was totaled because the repair cost was 75% of the value of the bike.
You want thorough documentation of the damage and basically you want the dealership on your side.
HD wants you to have the bike totaled so they`ll be in a better position to sell you a new one. HD is NOT on your side! I went through this back in 2015 when I was in a lay down accident and my bike had engine guards. There wasn`t nearly enough damage to the bike to total it IMHO, so I took it to another HD dealer. They totaled it as well. Both dealers charged me for the estimates too! Those estimates were grossly overstated, with stuff put in them which weren`t even damaged. It was a con job from the get go. And to top it off my title would have been changed to a salvage title, and I was still paying on the bike. I opted to let the bike go back to the finance company and take the hit on what the extended warranty return value I had left......, and that took me over 6 months to recover after jumping through endless hoops with HD.
