I located a 2002 FLHRI with 4.000 miles on the odometer and I am close to buying it. I know that the Screaming Eagle cam chain tensioner upgrade is highly recommended, but have a question about the inner cam bearings.
What year did Harley Davidson start using the cheaper inner cam bearings on the twin cam motors? I was under the impression it was in 2003. I do not have the tool to properly remove and install the inner cam bearings and question whether it is necessary when replacing the cam chain tensioner with a more reliable unit. Installing the upgraded chain tensioner is doable for me, I just don't have the tool for the inner cam bearings..
The tool is cheap enough. Some auto parts stores rent them.
With that '02, I would strongly consider going to gear drive cams. Check crank runout to be sure, but that year should be good.
