Default 2012 Road King Brake Light Issues

Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm fairly new here, so I hope that this is the right area for this. I've got a good one for you... at least, I'm confused. I am an audio engineer by trade and very familiar with wiring and electrical flow and diagrams, etc. I am stumped.

I recently purchased this bike and basically broke the bike down to nothing cleaned, painted, powdered, etc and put it back together. Everything is great, but... I am getting no brake lights from front or rear. Both running lights and turn signals work fine. I recently replaced my handle bars on my 2012 Road King Classic, which included lengthening the wires. I also have replaced the rear fender with a Street Glide fender and light setup, but I have been also checking back against the stock fender with the stock light set up.

I have tested both front and rear brakes independently with the other fully unplugged. I disconnected the front at the connector in the nacelle and the rear at the two connectors midway back behind the exhaust. Neither work with the other disconnected and the running lights maintain the same brightness, so it's not that the brakes are on.
With a multimeter, I get continuity at the nacelle connector from the front brake (and the tab is not broken).
I get continuity across the connectors on the multimeter from the rear when I push on the brake pedal.
I checked all of the fuses and they have continuity, but I did not check them for resistance yet.
Today I picked up a new brake relay at HD. It made no difference, but I realized that I can not hear it clicking, so I am now thinking that signal is interrupted somewhere before the relay.

Do you agree with my assessment that it would be before the fuse block? Where is the last point that I can check with a multimeter before it hits the fuse block? What else am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Does bike have ABS? Do you have the wiring diagram?

It does have ABS. I do have a wiring diagram, but haven’t dug into the after nacelle part on that yet. Gets imvolved with some wires are only for faring bikes some for nacelle, etc. Just seeing if you guys had any knowledge on tap or had dealt with something similar before.

Recently had the same issue with my 2012 Road King. Performed many of the same checks you describe and it turned out to be the small wiring harness/connector section leading to the tail light assembly. I guess I disturbed something when I changed the rear tire.

If you follow the wiring diagram, you can trace the wiring from the coil on the relay and troubleshoot from there. The wiring diagram I looked at was specific to FLHR models with ABS.

The Brake switches, front and back, get power from the accessory fuse O/W. With ABS, when either switch is made, power is sent to ABS Module and to a diode pack . From the diode pack it goes to the coil on the Brake relay R/BE. The Brake fuse provides power to the N/O contact of the brake relay O/V.
I would check the Fuses again.
Disconnect the Diode Pack, connector 201, under left side cover - under fuse box, and see if you have 12V to ground on R/BN and PK/BN when you close the Brake switches. If you do check the diodes, reconnect the pack and see if slot 86 gets hot at the relay when you close a switch.

So, this is embarrassing. I think I found my problem. Apparently, the bike didn’t have the ABS Diode Pack installed and I never noticed. 😎

Btw, it’s part # 72547-08

I can confirm that it was the ABS diode pack. It arrived today, I popped it in, and have both rear and front brake lights. The part is currently on back order with no listed fulfillment date, so I found an OEM still in the package on eBay. Thanks again, guys.
