If you decide to replace the compensator, (I would recommend it) the rotor on the engine crank shaft inboard of the compensator will also need to be replaced. All of the new compensators require the new rotor including the latest of the Harley comps. The parts guy is not trying to con you out of more money.

^^this. "hot start kickback". I do a starter blip on my TC96 to remedy when bike is hot (no issue when cold and all has bled off) but wish I had some kind of compression release.
