While riding last night the heel shifter fell off...oh well it's a Harley. Well upon further inspection and re attachment of the heel shifter I noticed that the rear shift lever that is attached to the shifter pawl has walked its way off and can be slid on and off with no tension at all. I tried unsuccessfully to tighten the allen head down. I called the dealer and they told me the only wasy to get to it is to remove the entire primary. So in she goes tomorrow. Just thought I would pass on the info as a fyi to check yours.
What old.gezr said, mine stayed long enough to get it home from the dealer.
By the way, the shift shaft is easily removed without removing the primary. 10 minute job at the most. Just remove the inner lever and slide the shaft out. I would question your dealer's motives

Thanks, the bike is still under warranty. If they want to remove it it is up to them.
BTW, I happen to like the heel shifter. To each their own.
myzen,
Not sure what you're riding, but TC-88/TC-96 front shift spline goes through the cases through cast opening. Entire spline comes out when you remove inner shift arm (allen head bolt accessed between inner primary and lower engine case). I guess I've got a heavy shifting foot because my toe shift failde (wore teeth off the spline) in our trip to Florida. Stopped at Charleston HD where service writer said they'd have to remove inner primary to replace the spline. Went to parts, got the spline and a new toe shift lever and changed them out in the parking lot. Not much to it - especially if even I could do it!
I use my heel shifter exclusively except for 1st - note on the cap screws -- The 04-06 parts books show the capscrews 1-3 in the attached rudimentary drawing to all be the same size/part number (1/4" I believe). The capscrew on the inside spline side (#3) is 3/8" and length does matter. Three trips to two dealers, how I know this is a story for another post: Let's just say the parts guy at my local dealer told me to go to Lowes or Home Depot if I wanted something other than what the parts book said...at least he said it with a smile.[:@]
