You've never had the desire to adjust your backrest while on a long ride? I know I occasionally fiddle with my backrest while on 200+ mile days. Yes, the HD adjustable backrest is expensive, but for someone that appreciate the ability to dynamically change the backrest on a ride, it's worth it!
Not really and I appreciate the simplicity and reliability. Ridden 900+ miles several times one way and its been good.

This whole discussion is perfect.
Every one is different, and I see it from all angles.
My VTX has the Ultimate Seat (very comfortable), which has their back-rest. I adjusted and played with it for a couple seasons until I had it just where I wanted it. But if I lose weight, which has happened as when I retired from Verizon, I Lost 60 lbs, I adjusted it again. It also tilts down so I can easily throw my leg over.
So the H-D adjustable should be perfect for me.
Forums like this are great resources.
Thank you, one and all!
How does the Grasshopper backrest post retain in the bracket? Friction? I watched the product video but it appears to just slide in/out without much resistance. Is it too loose making loss an issue?

Yeah, it shouldn't say "friction", it should say "gravity". It just slides down... due to gravity lol we drilled and tapped a set screw into one, with a small divot in the "post" because the guy wanted it to set a little higher. But its heavy enough it ain't gonna bounce out going down the road.
My brother uses a grasshopper that I had tried out and I use the one from Bad Boys, I think its called "CVO Backrest" or something... what a price difference in the two. This "style" is a great option for solo seats that didn't/don't come with a backrest mount in them. But one thing about this design of backrests, compared to like the HD style ones that has the backrest bracket mounted under the seat (that won't work on solo seats), there is a lot of "flex" on these if you lean back on it with any weight. I run one 90 percent of the time, it works fine for me, but... just be aware.
Thanks, SSL. Sounds like a great option. Getting the H-D non-adjustable in/out of the bracket without removing the Sundowner is a royal PITA. At 63 / 270, I guess I should have asked if the Grasshopper was tater-rated. Lol
