Default Adding heated grips to Police model

I just purchase a set of bars to upgrade my stock bars on my recently purchased bike. I was thinking it would be a great time to add a set of heated grips. From the wiring schematic I see at least some of the wiring must be on the bike but I know that the police bikes do have some wiring that is different.

I'm wondering if anybody on the forum knows if the wiring I'd need is on the bike, or what I would need to do in order to add OEM Harley Davidson heated grips to my bike? I'm not having much luck searching the interwebs looking for an answer.

Thanks for any help you all can provide. Bike in question is in my signature.

Plug your VIN into "Harley Service Portal" to see the police specific diagram if you haven`t already done so.
( I suspect all `14 baggers are prewired for optional heated grips , could be wrong)

Thanks for your suggestion. I have looked over the schematic and I do see where some of the wirings seems to be on the bike. It shows right side and left side and just lists it as not used. I’m not sure if there is wiring beyond that, which I’ll need or where those plugs would be. Guessing within the front fairing somewhere, so maybe I won’t be able to figure it out until I get it home and taken apart. Thanks again.

You`ll be able to find the existing wires because you know the colors
A test light will show them dead with ignition off and live when switched on
The instruction sheet provided with the grips will make it more clear
And shows the additional harness required for your application

I think that the harness #69200722 is only needed on the fairing bikes for the Road Glide Ultra (that what I have lol). Wouldn't be needed unless you don't have the power wires already behind the fairing, like the rest of the batwings... and all of the shark noses except for the RGU

On yours, get the outer fairing off and check for 1) the power wire, if you have the "power port" (cigarette lighter) on clutch side of your fairing, your going to be looking for a 2-wire connector coming off the back of it. Then 2) the "interconnect wire" coming from the throttle side, another 2 wire connector. Usually found just inside the fairing, coming thru the grommet in to the fairing with the wires coming from the throttle side switch pack (but not in the same are separate once inside the fairing).
I'll check and see if I can find for sure the location on a police model, but if it was another batwing bike thats where you'd find the two connectors you're going to be looking for, and then if they are there, what's in with the heated grips kit that you buy should be all you need.

Ssitruc,

Thanks for your help as well. Right now I left the bike in storage at the dealership, but I'm just working ahead to gather up what I need to be able to install my bars once I get it brought home. I may go get it sooner than later so I can dig into it a bit. I have to pull the front fairing off anyway, as I need to replace the weatherstriping or whatever it is on both sides. Besides the heated grips, I'm thinking I'll switch out the handle bar switches so that they are ready for adding stereo equipment later.

I do remember that there is a cigarette style plug on the right hand side (brake side), but I don't recall any ports on the Left (clutch side). I mainly recall the one on the right side because the cover was broken off.

Anyway, I do appreciate the info.

As a follow-up, I found a video on youtube with an install and it showed what you were talking about as far as the wiring in the fairing. Now I know what to look for and it appears you are correct that if they're all the same, then I wont need that extra harness.

Thanks

Patrick

Yeah, I tried to look for the connectors, and your fairing set up could be a bit different lol If it has the wiring in there for the "interconnect cable, the 2 wire connector coming from the throttle side grip to hook to the clutch side grip, you should be able to find it with the harness wires coming from the throttle side switch pack and throttle by wire wires. It'll be a little 2 wire connector not plugged into anything, and usually be a black and white wire.
I found them on a 2016 FLHP "Connector Location" diagram behind the headlight, but count find it on FLHTP diagram...

Then there's the power lol because of the police bike, things could be different it looks like, because of the other stuff used on a police bike... If you don't find an Accessory Power connector in the faring to use, you can use that harness mentioned above (69200722) to get power from your "accessory" power plug under the left side cover... but that only gets power to up under your seat area, and then you have to get it thru the wiring trough under the tank, up to the center of the bars. I have a RGU and you have to use that harness on them (only Rushmore era fairing bike that it has to be done on... except maybe yours!), and the direction for the heated grips have you plug 3 short 2-wire harness extensions together (included in the kit) to run power up thru the trough... I hated that and made my own harness instead (more connector more potential problems).

Hopefully somebody with a FLHTP, that has actually done it on your type of bike will chip in here! I have seen heated grips on a 14 or 15 FLHTP, so it can be done lol

Yeah, I think I'm following you. I think I can go ahead and buy the grips and if the connectors arent in the fairing I can still install them and worry about wiring them up after getting the bars themselves installed using the other harness you mentioned.

Thanks for the help once again.
