That smell you get when you pull your oil cap from a hot vehicle. All good. Spend time on checking more important things on her like cam chain tensioners. Unfortunately Harley has you by the ***** working on their bikes. Special tools for pulling tensioners and locking the gears. Was going to do it myself when i feel brave enough.
I think you will be better served if you ask your initial question in the mechanical forum under tuning.

Ride safe!

I have a 2005 Dyna Low Rider with fuel injection, but it doesn't have O2 sensors in the exhaust. If this is your case, it's easy to adjust fuel mix. I installed an open filter and exhaust, also installed a TFI or DFO (digital fuel optimizer). This enables the user to dial in the pulse width, opening time, of the injectors. The user can dial in the DFO similar to a carb. Simple hookup, contact Dobeck Performance or Techlusion. After I installed mine I dial it in and the felt temp for the heads seemed to be reduced and the bike was/is real responsive. My ECM has preprogramed parameters from HD, no sensors to read regarding exhaust mix.

Look into a tuner for your year, hopefully one that plugs in, pushes the tune based on your selections, and then un plugs, and nothing stays on the bike. The screaming Eagle pro would be a great option, if it works for that year, as well as the Vance & Hines fp3, again, if available for your bike.

I don’t recall what year was the new era, but earlier bikes were able to adjust well +/- 10% without a tune / tuner, when a basic stage 1 free flowing air cleaner and set of slip on mufflers were installed.

All that said, I do believe a tuner added to your stage 1 upgrade will help the bike run better, more efficient (based on tune selections), and very likely, cooler.

Kind of a weird looking filter for a classy Road King? I went with this one from Lowbrow Customs last year on my Dyna, made in the USA by The Gasbox in Ohio for $99.95. Install was simple & it's made out of stainless steel instead of chinesium. I bought breather bolts from TC Bros for ease of install. I did need a bracket but you might not (it's steel & connects to the heads at the breather bolts) but it'll still be about the same price if you have to buy the bracket & breather bolts. Here's the link-
