Default Amazon TCMT Chopped Tour Pack

This is a review of the TCMT Chopped Tour Pack found on Amazon. The package I bought includes a matte black chopped tour pack, liner, and matte black detachable mounting rack - this package sells for $232.

To be honest I'm impressed yet again (as I was with my lowers from the same company). I always expect these Amazon items to be absolute trash, but they're more than acceptable.

The first thing I did before assembly - added blue Loctite to every bolt (I've learned!).

Here's my unboxing/installation/pre-ride analysis - more will come as I actually begin to use it.
Pros:
  • Not flimsy, feels solid, though there is a little flex on the hinge wall when the lid is flopped all the way open
    • Easily cured by adjusting tether length
  • Tether is adjustable to change how far the lid opens (which eliminates the flex in the hinge wall)
  • There are indentations in the bottom indicating where to drill the holes in tour pack for mounting to bracket
  • There are indentations in the lid indicating where to drill the holes for mounting backrest pad
  • Bracket is stout and the included latches on the bracket are metal and function well
  • Bracket is matte black, which closely matches rest of bike, rather than gloss black
  • All needed hardware is supplied (although I did upgrade the hardware)
    • came with 1/4-20 (yes, imperial hardware!) pan head bolts, nylock nuts, and stamped washers
    • Since the bracket slots are large enough for 5/16 bolts, that's what I installed: 5/16-18 x .75" BHCS, fender washer (for a larger footprint), washer, nylock nuts
  • The finish is smooth, not blemishes
  • I can use my detachable sissy bar/backrest with the TP installed!
  • The included liner is the same sort of carpeted liner you'd get in your car's trunk (molded to TP, firm, carpeted)
  • Seal in the lid looks and feels great quality, not expecting any leaks
Cons:
  • The color is slightly off when in direct sunlight (doesn't look as bad as the pictures make it look) - this isn't a surprise to me because I know there's a difference between "matte" and "denim" - slightly greyer color on the TP than the bike
  • Latch and hinges are brass(?) and cheaply chrome-plated - I easily scraped the chrome off an inconspicuous place, it flaked right off, and the material underneath looks like brass
    • I expect these latch and hinges to be corroded in a year since I ride in rain - I plan to blast them and paint matte black at some point anyway to match rest of bike's latches
  • Easy to strip screws if you're an ape with a screwdriver
    • Two screws (one in latch, one in hinge) were overtightened from factory and stripped
  • Mounting holes need to be drilled
  • Fairly clumsy to maneuver and drill holes, bolt together
  • Liner doesn't fit as well with mounting bolts installed (no functional issue, just doesn't sit flush with bottom)
More pictures will come soon! Storm blew through here and I ran out of time!

Thanks for the review. I’ve been looking at buying one of these (solo setup) for a bit but haven’t quite decided if I really need one. Same with the lowers. Maybe I’ll give it another look.

I ride solo 100% of the time and when doing week long trips, I have a solo H-D luggage rack and a First Down luggage bag which has been adequate so far. I do like the look with the tour pack and it could help with quick grocery and/ or beer runs though.

I wasn't as smart as you and didn't think of putting Loctite on all of the fasteners, and the latch fell apart within the first 10 minutes of a ride, LOL! I went to my local Harley store and bought a black hinge and latch kit and replaced the cheapo stuff. It was a perfect fit. Also, the mount that was supposed to be included didn't show up with the tour pack, so I bought one at HD, and the guys in China reimbursed me - I think $75. I'm happy with it, and other than what I described it's pretty solid.

ETA - Mine rattled and it was really annoying, so I installed an HD lid seal and that problem was cured.

This pic is from last year up in Washington, loaded down with 21 days of crap for a Sturgis trip.

I've been debating on what to do for the last 7 months since buying my SG. I just can't justify 1k plus for the few times a year I'd use it but was hesitant to go Amazon route either.

I might pull trigger though after reading this. Very helpful info on the hardware upgrade and loctite aspect

I've been using my bike as primary transportation and don't ever plan on removing the pack. It will get plenty of use. Groceries, etc.

I ride solo 99% of the time and wish I had a solo seat to put the solo tour pack mount on. I like the look much better, and having a backrest would be nice.

Love the bike - looks great. I'm glad to hear the pack is holding up well! Looks like it can handle some loads. Do you have the plate inside to add support?

Thank you, and yes, I installed the plate too.

Amazon Amazon

I should also note that the yellow dry bag strapped to the top wasn't very heavy. It has 2 full face helmets, 2 sets of rain gear, a wool army blanket and a heavy jacket. For a cheap Amazon rack it's holding up really well.

Anybody that gets this tour pack won't be disappointed. I changed several things but am still well under the cost of an HD version.

First ride with the tour pack today - 50 miles roundtrip for groceries. While idling, the unloaded tour pack shakes around a little but while riding, I reached back and felt the tour pack and the mount, no shaking. On the ride back home, tour pack was holding about 30 pounds of food - no concerns whatsoever, no flex, no shaking, just solid.

The latches on the mount have a poor fit with the bolts and there's quite a bit of slop. I can lift up on the back of the tourpack and it will lift up about 1/4". The latches on the mount do not move, just the nut/bolt passing through the latches. Not sure what the long term implications are, but I might make a small brass bushing to take up the play in that fitting. The nut passes through the frame of the mounting rack, a wave washer, the latch, then a flat washer before the bolt ties everything together. It seems like the nut is too long which doesn't allow the bolt to put pressure on the latch, which allows for the latch to be sloppy. For the time being, I added a thicker washer under the bolt head so it will at least clamp the latch and hold it tighter. While not a long-term solution is has removed most of the slop.

I found that the liner fits better and the tether works better if you remove the tether anchor then reinstall it through the liner.
