I have the 3m tape but had no luck using a polishing compound with fiber cloth to remove scuffs. Can anyone recommend one? Tried Carfident scratch and swirl remover but returning it. It's not swirls nor scratches but tried anyway.
If you do not have a machine polisher, try using a cotton ball with the compound on it.
Rub in circles, then horizontal, then vertical and back to in circles again until the compound starts to dry or liquefy. Then use a new cotton ball to remove the compound.
It takes quite a bit of rubbing if you do not have a machine.
You probably will not get then all out, but just shine them up and make them less noticeable.
Then put the 3M on and call it good, OCD be damned.

That part always gets scuffed from the passenger backrest. Can't see it unless tourpak's open so no big deal to me. But, I have some pretty serious swirling scuff marks on the top of my tourpak from the luggage I strap onto the luggage rack when traveling long distances. Just loose straps and the natural sagging that happens have conspired to do the damage. Sucks.
That film will be great at protecting the paint. So great in fact that the paint outside the film will age differently and it will look even more uneven.
I have scuffs on the tank from the seat, on the rear fender from the seat, on the side covers from my legs. Maybe someday I'll repaint the bike and restore it but for now, the rocks, rain, and dust are having their way with the paint and I really don't care.

Funny, we put the 3m tape to protect paint from scuff that looks bad, but the tape looks like $#it!
Net gain though, don't have to wipe residue off of leather backrest every day.
