Default Philly to Tampa Fl

Hi all, you iron butts chime in. My brother bought a home down in Fl. He’s planning on riding his 2014 Street Glide to Tampa. Mind you I think he made have 500 miles round trip under his belt, and is 65 years young. My question is things he should know and tips some of you may have? Thanks a bunch, this is his big brother 🤠

Spring Hill 35 minutes north of Tampa. I know to well, I lived in central Florida 27 years.

Its hot and humid, hydrate and rest during gas stops, pack rain gear and dry cloths for the popup storm.

1000 miles. I'd break it into 2 days. Getting around Baltimore & DC wont be fun on I-95, he could take 301 to Richmond then hop on 95.
Getting Camelbak is worthwhile investment. Pack it full of ice and top off with water. Sipping all day is better for you than trying to chug a bottle of water or two at every stop.

The DelMar penisula is a nice ride the first day, taking you across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge into Norfolk, VA. Head west on 58 and pick up 95 from there.

I agree to avoid I-95, basically, from Philly to DC. Better yet, take the back way on 30 to 15 to 95 in Fredericksburg. Or 30 to I-81 and then I-77 to Columbia SC. Take the beltways around major cities. He can take I-85 from Charlotte to Atlanta and then I-75 to Tampa if he chooses.

I worked in King of Prussia and commuted for about a month from NC on the weekends. I also frequent Orlando from Charlotte now and traveling on weekends is a better bet from the traffic.

Watch the weather and hydrate often if it's hot. I use a skinny 24oz Hydroflask for my water bottle. It keeps ice all day long and I just fill with Gatorade. Long sleeved T's are a must for me to keep my arms from getting cooked.

Yep, done the trip two days never did 301, I must tell him about it. Rocky mount is half way point, perhaps he can ride S. of the border and pull over for night. Thanks..

Tell him to take his time (if available) and enjoy the ride...unless he's on a schedule. A good buddy has winter home about an hour south of Tampa (Bradenton/Sarasota). We've made the ride from there back home here to Ontario (north of Toronto) a few times. Take a different route each time in order to see different areas. Always take our time and stay off the interstates as much as possible. Usually take 4 days, try and stay on the two lanes and take the long way home.

We try to avoid the bigger cities...especially during rush hour. Stop every couple of hours to hydrate & stretch. Also agree if no jacket, long sleeve tees are a must to keep your arms from getting roasted. My absolute favourite on these trips is the riding first thing in the mornings.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

do 64 around Richmond, then state rt 58 out to Emporia and head south

295 west to I-10 to US 301 from just north of Jacksonville to get him out to Ocala where he can pick up I-75 for the rest of his trip.

301 is speed trap city, you have been warned

Virginia hates speeders, and they hit you hard in the wallet for the slightest infraction.... you have been warned.
