Default Headed towards DC next week.

My wife and I are headed from South Dakota towards Washington DC next week. I have questions about the Interstate 80/90 toll road from Ill to Pa. Is it a pretty good/safe route? How about road conditions? What kind of toll would I have to pay for the distance. Probably more if I get off and on to see the sights? My alternate route would be Interstate 74 to Indianapolis and hen 70 and 68 out towards Va. Has any one ridden these recently? I will beriding the 07 Flhtc and pullinga trailer. We have been to DC on the bike before and it is just scary driving there. Is there anywhere I absolutley should not miss?

Don't know about the roads that you said but you are correct, its scary driving around DC. Please be careful & safe. Idiots will run you over. If you never done it, try Arlington National Cemetary and see the Honor Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Lived and worked in Washington for 22 years.
There is so much to do and see in the Washington D.C. area.
Two relatively new museums that are very interesting:
1.Air and Space Museum. You don't even have to go downtown to see part of it http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/udvarhazy/artifacts.cfm, it's out by Dulles Airport in Virginia.
2. Another really good stop is the National Marine Corps Museum in Quantico http://www.usmcmuseum.org/.

I would say George Washington's home on the Potomac, Mt. Vernon is a also must see IMO.

All three of these locations are outside the Beltway where the traffic is a little more bearable.
Hope you have an enjoyable and safe trip.

68/70 are great rodes for bikes until you get near Frederick MD..70/270 split, traffic becomes a nightmare because of all the DC people who have moved out of the city to northern regions. You may want to look at jumping off near Hancock and heading south and then east towards DC. You'll love riding 68 no tolls, speed limit in WV is 75 and lots of good places to stop and sightsee.

Ride safe

johnharley,,,,,,,,,,,I travel to DC and Chantilly, Va very often since my daughter lives in that area. I usually take back roads, more fun. The route your suggesting( I 74, 70 and 68) is a good route. But in order to do that you have use I 79 south to Morgantown, Wv. Then you will pick up I 68 there. This is how you would do it that way. I 74 to I 70 east, then I 79 south, then I 68 east, then pick up I 70 again in Hancock, Md. You may want to think about using I 70 the whole way. Part of it is toll( the Pa turnpike ).

When you get into Frederick, I would recommend taking the Rt 340/15 South cutoff.Stay on Rte 15 south to Leesburg, take rt 15 bypass to Dulles Greenway (toll but uses ezpass/smartpass) to end, stay right toward rte 28/Dulles airport. Take 28 south to I-66. Go east one exit to Rte 7100 (Fairfax Co.parkway) south and and then into Burke. You will avoid the I-270 and I-495 mess and arrive a lot more relaxed. Just my humble suggestion. Ride Safe
