2003 Harley FLHTCU-I Speed Sensor
Hoping to get some intel on the Speed sensor for older touring bikes. I recently replaced my stator, regulator and battery and then on my last cruise my speedo bounced around until it crapped out on me, self cancelling turn signals didn't shut off and my cruise wasn't functioning. After some light reading it seems to be the speed sensor has gone.
Question, do they ever get gummed up and need cleaning or will it need to be replaced?
Thanks in advance for any insight into this.

Yes, you can clean the speed sensor......
Just pull the speed sensor and see if it has debris stuck all over the end. It'll look like metal filings hanging on the tip. If so, clean it, replace it, and see if that fixes your issue..
Here's a pic I found online of a dirty Harley speed sensor...

However, the way you describe your issue, it sounds more like a failed speed sensor, rather than a dirty one... I recently replaced the VSS on my '03 Heritage..
It had erratic speedo, the turn signals wouldn't self-cancel, and the VSS was clean as a whistle when I checked it = bad VSS
Installed a new one and all is good...
Good luck with your repair...
