2012 FLHX my side covers are becoming polished over time. Not sure if factory paint is cleared. Can part be sanded down and reapply a matte clear? what's the best fix, on the cheap?
There is a paint that is readily available and it is a very good match for the original Black Denim.
It is, believe it or not, a John Deere (yes, the tractor company) paint called "Blitz Black".
You can get it in spray cans. (Google it to find a supplier)
Denim wears. That's what it does. My 11 years old Springer has denim and my 2020 has denim. The Street Glide is wearing, it seems, at a faster rate. I'm saving for new paint and I'm done with denim. But wearing in is the charm.
Not sure about about fixing it on the cheap. You're more likely to make it worse.
I've had denim redone where it has "wore" on bikes. My painter does an awesome job with it. Denim is nothing more the regular black paint with a matte clear. Sand down the matte clear and respray. I don't like the look of "wore" matte paint. To each his own.
My previous bike (Nightster) was black denim and I used the JD Blitz Black along with a matte clear to paint an air cleaner cover that my friend machined for me. It turned out to be a very good match.

Does this mean, if one were to sand to the base and shoot clear, the paint would look like the vivid black? I've always thought it would have a gray hue.

From what my painter says...(If I'm understanding him correct) Yes, that is exactly what would happen. It's regular black paint sprayed first, then simply a matte clear on top of it. That's why when your boot or whatever rubs a spot on matte paint to much it rubs shinny.
