I’ve been trying to diagnose a squeak coming from the tourpack on my 2015 Limited for two years now. Had it in the shop at least three times. This last time the Tech noted there were some worn parts, but only tightened them. The squeak seems to be coming from the base. They say it’s because I’ve had too much weight in the tourpack, it’s just worn out. Anyone else run into this? The squeak is unbelievable. Bikes four bikes back in formation complain about it.
You sure its the tour pack and not the rubber isolators for the slip-ons, that drove me nuts for a year.
rk classic.
Absolutely check this! lol very noticeable when idling sometimes, when everything is shaking to that rhythm...
They make a squeaking sound, when its doing it, put your toe of your shoe against the tip of your muffles, to "firm" it up for a second and see if the squeak stops.
Tour packs tend to "rattle" if the bushings are loose or need to be adjusted, but that with quick-disconnect kits,
I replaced the headers this spring with true duals, and had new slipons put on shortly thereafter. I don’t doubt the Dealership used the old hardware. How do you get rid of the squeak if it’s the muffler mounts?
Replace the rubber bushings under the saddle bags, that's usually what's squeaking. FWIW, I had one that even with a new bushing in there it squeaked as it idled and shook around (doesn't take much movement to cause the squeak). The rubber wasn't tight inside the mount, so I "dinged" the metal just a bit to make the rubber fit tighter... no more squeak. But the easy way to check if that is where the "squeak" is coming from is, while it's idling and squeaking, put your foot against the end of the muffle to hold it firm... if the squeak stops, there's your squeak. Then you can take the saddle bag off and watch the mount shimmy in the rubber bushing, causing the squeak. They're like 10 bucks.
This is what we're talking about....
Just to add on to the muffler rubbers. If you can’t get them do to “supply chain issues”, you can just spray them with a shot of silicone. Will quiet them and work for a bit until you can replace. I actually got another year or so out of them lol.
I took the rubbers out and soaked them in oil, and they looked like they needed it. Having done this I can see how they would be the guilty party. I’m riding Sunday so we’ll see if it helps. No matter, I’ve ordered new ones and will replace them when they come in. My thanks to all who shared their experience. You would think that Certified HD Mechanics would have caught this on the first visit, but Mikes’s Famous here in New London, CT are obviously only interested in selling new bikes, not helping you find what’s driving you crazy about the one you’ve already paid for!
