Default First Touring bike need help please

Hi Guys
After Sportster, Slim and awesome Heritage today I made a jump and I bought my first Touring - 2022 Road King Special.

Please forgive me for newbie questions as everything about this bike is new to me and I need some guidance. For reference I am 200lbs and tiny wife is 115lbs as I have few questions on suspension. For windshield questions I am 5”10”

1. Rear suspension on this bike is hell comparing to my previous 2019 Heritage. I realize adjustment is really important to get this right so I wonder if I can get decent ride with proper adjustment as the first step.

2. From my research seems like this bike has 12” shock while Standard RK has 13” so this is option I consider if adjustment only wont help. Is Ultra shock is even more heavy duty? I read people with regular RK dont have any issues with rear suspension even in stock form. Please school me on options here as I want this bike really comfortable for long trips with my wife and I am already terrified if it was something I can correct without spending fortune.

3. Definitely will need new seat for my lady and she loved regular RK seat so this might be first option but here I wonder if these seats are interchangeable between SG/RG and RK and what years fitment I should look for. Was latest redesign in 2014 and up till 2022 is same set up?
Corbin was always good to me so it is last resort financially.

4. I am looking for regular RK passenger floor boards set up as my girl loved those too so if anyone have set I might be interested and here again what years will be exchangeable with 2022?

5. Windshield is a must for me for long trips so if you are same size what works for you as far as height? What year range will fit 2022 RKS

6. My dash shows RR and somenumbers are these tires pressure (didn't have a chance to even read my manual)

7. Can I start bike with key only I know HD only give one fob these days so I am not sure. I know I can do PIN if needed

8. Definitely need to adjust handlebar so I believe I will have to remove clamp cover but no clue how. I seen videos I will have to peel off lock cover next to clamp 2 screws and then dive in inside headlight to get fin trim of the lamp??? Is that correct?

Thats all what I got for now. This bike is huge so it is definitely adjustment for me but I want to build mile eater and travel on this monster far away so comfort and functionality is #1 priority since looks are already there with blacked out theme.

I love that there is so many choices to customize this ride as I was reaching accessories limit on my Heritage.

Thanks in advance for all the help I guess I will be hanging out here more often from now.

I'm 5'8" at 220 and wife is same size as yours. I ride 95% solo after she learned to ride her own but have experience 2-up.

1. Rear suspension on this bike is hell comparing to my previous 2019 Heritage. I realize adjustment is really important to get this right so I wonder if I can get decent ride with proper adjustment as the first step.

You'll never be totally satisfied with the stock shocks. Go ahead and order new shocks of your choice and start with a 2-up setting of 12 and tweak from there.

2. From my research seems like this bike has 12” shock while Standard RK has 13” so this is option I consider if adjustment only wont help. Is Ultra shock is even more heavy duty? The 12" (Low) are standard on the Specials. I ran 13" Progressives for a while but that was slightly high for me at a 32" inseam after installing a Mustang seat that lifted me up a bit. I've since gone to 11.85" Bitubos.

My '17 Special had a "Tallboy" on it when I bought it. Very comfortable seat for Wifey and I but I ended going with a Mustang to move me a little closer to bars. Don't remember the P/N right off but I can stay in it all day.

4. I am looking for regular RK passenger floor boards set up as my girl loved those too so if anyone have set I might be interested and here again what years will be exchangeable with 2022?

Can't help on this.

5. Windshield is a must for me for long trips so if you are same size what works for you as far as height? What year range will fit 2022 RKS

I run an 18" Freedom Shield on mine. You should decide on a seat before you buy a windshield.

6. My dash shows RR and somenumbers are these tires pressure (didn't have a chance to even read my manual)

Dunno about this.

7. Can I start bike with key only I know HD only give one fob these days so I am not sure. I know I can do PIN if needed

If it's the same as mine you can enter your PIN if the FOB isn't present.

8. Definitely need to adjust handlebar so I believe I will have to remove clamp cover but no clue how. I seen videos I will have to peel off lock cover next to clamp 2 screws and then dive in inside headlight to get fin trim of the lamp??? Is that correct?

Yes you can easily adjust your bars with a 1/4" Hex Key by removing the top cover. It easily pops of with a little persuasion from a small flathead screwdriver. I put painters tape on the tip to protect the the finish and pry off the cover exposing the back screws of the clamp.

Congrats on the New Scoot! Got Pics?

Yes. Adjust the preload based on your weights combined and luggage.

2. From my research seems like this bike has 12” shock while Standard RK has 13” so this is option I consider if adjustment only wont help. Is Ultra shock is even more heavy duty? If you ride two up, the stock suspension will show it's faults, but I rode 10k miles before swapping. It's not a deal breaker. The 13 is better than the 12, and in the aftermarket the options abound. I would ride for a while and decide for yourself, don't be scared of it. And, I changed mine because a lot of two up riding and occasional hard riding.

3. Definitely will need new seat for my lady and she loved regular RK seat so this might be first option but here I wonder if these seats are interchangeable between SG/RG and RK and what years fitment I should look for. Was latest redesign in 2014 and up till 2022 is same set up?

2014-to current.

4. I am looking for regular RK passenger floor boards set up as my girl loved those too so if anyone have set I might be interested and here again what years will be exchangeable with 2022?
It's an easy swap and nearly universal. So find the style you like and bolt them on.

5. Windshield is a must for me for long trips so if you are same size what works for you as far as height? What year range will fit 2022 RKS
2014 is a safe bet. If you get the chance to get the one from HD with the vent, get the vent.

6. My dash shows RR and somenumbers are these tires pressure (didn't have a chance to even read my manual)
The RR means it is showing the rear tire pressure in the mesurment you select, so RR 42 for instance would be 42psi
Most of these were answered. Here's a few I could chime in on. Congrats on the new bike and enjoy.

Thank you guys so just to clarify on handlebar adjustment. Do I have to open up my headlight to remove clamp cover or just remove 2 screws from under fork lock plate?

Seems like swapping suspension to 13” might cure my fears in case adjustment of 12” stockers wont work thats good to hear.

Appreciate all the help so far.

The 2 screws under the cover will loosen enough for adjustment without going into the nacelle. Just back them off. No need to remove completely.

I forgot the Special had lower shocks. My comment in another response was for the King with 13" shocks.

That extra inch of travel in the regular shocks helps a lot.

6. My dash shows RR and some numbers are these tires pressure (didn't have a chance to even read my manual)
The display with show FR for front pressure and RR for the rear. There's another screen that shows R and that's for range to empty. On mine, that runs a little optimistic. When it says 60 miles range, there's only about 3/4 gallon in there which is good for about 30 miles. Do pay attention to you first dozen or so fill-ups to gain insight into how far you can go.

8. Definitely need to adjust handlebar so I believe I will have to remove clamp cover but no clue how. I seen videos I will have to peel off lock cover next to clamp 2 screws and then dive in inside headlight to get fin trim of the lamp??? Is that correct?
As was mentioned, the "Road King" emblem on the triple-tree cover pops off. Remove it and you will see two (of the four) Allen bolts that clamp the aft side of the handlebar mount. When you adjust the bars, make sure to check that they do not hit the console on either side of the speedometer. I pulled my back, but could only go about 1/2" due to this clash. I took my cover off so I could check the factory torque of the two front bolts (one was almost loose). It is a pain to get to the fin's aft screw, but there's no way around that if you want to get the cover off.
I just got mine 2 months ago (first HD ever) and love it. I'm sure you will love yours as well.

If you have RDRS, then the tire pressure will show in the odometer window. As you toggle through the displays, (right after the gear/rpm indicator), you'll see FR, then RR.. FR is your front tire pressure RR is the rear tire pressure.

Not sure how bad of 12" stock shocks. I feel pretty good on my 13" stock shocks when comparing to previous Softail Street Bob.
